With the current pandemic disease in mind, if you are interested in systems thinking and how to analyse interconnected elements to better understand nowadays complexity and design interventions, this book offers a shocking yet inspiring opportunity for reflection.

A takeaway is also on the difficulty of measuring an unknown phenomenon and predicting its effects over a long period of time. Numbers concerning radiation levels and exposure have been fluctuating a lot, at the crossroads of medical research and political tensions.

The book gives clear evidence of how nature, economy and society are intertwined, and how the effects of hand-made modifications on the environment can impact multiple levels, from natural resources to nutrition, health, commerce, geo-politics and human rights.

📖 Manual for survival, a Chernobyl guide to the future by @katebrownMIT is a collection of documents and testimonies describing a multitude of implications and interventions that took place in the years/decades after the explosion of reactor 4 in Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Also, technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning play an increasingly important role in products designed for behaviour change, and this book helps reflect on how to approach the use of data with more transparency and integrity.

I’ve found particularly helpful the sections about detecting and solving ability blockers, showing practical applications of the Behaviour Change Wheel to ideate design interventions that address issues related to capability, opportunity and motivation.

📖 Engaged: Designing for Behavior Change by @amybphd is a guidebook for designers and practitioners who want to learn about psychology and motivation theories behind behaviour change, and how to apply them to product and service design.
