Mob rule will ultimately hurt all of us. Today we lost a young Dr to suicide afraid of persecution of herself and her family - such is the belief in lawlessness because those in charge are the perpetrators
Not a one of us in my medical community is untouched with sorrow.
"how can they be depressed, they have everything, their life is good"
No, this wasn't an uninformed ordinary person but a medical consultant who kept trying to convince me that the patients are spoilt and want attention - in 2021!
Parents body shaming their children and teenagers is psychological abuse
You may love your child and think you are doing this in best interest - you aren't
STOP! STOP! STOP!
It's a shame the loudest noises these days are spreading misinformation about Psychiatric Disorders and their treatments.
Avarice filled opportunists - individuals and institutes - can't be counted upon to do good, but one hopes they do no harm.
I know, unrealistic expectations
Annual conference so Indian Association of Private Psychiatry
Speaking on prevention of behavioural addictions in child and adolescents
Learning with friends and colleagues in person and not just virtual is a true treat
The commitment it takes to live a balanced life 😀 actually made a date with a friend to ensure it. Went on a a nice long drive to see the flowers in bloom.
Loved the pinks and blues

Words we speak, actions we take, attitudes we hold - can be damaging.
All abuse leaves a lasting impact on an individual, family, community, society.
@ResmaaMenakem
thank you
I don't want to hear of another Dr telling a patient they don't need Psychiatric meds without the treating Psychiatrist's advice
It's a simple enough, logical expectation isn't it?
It might happen in my lifetime - call me an optimist
@IndianPsychiat1
As a psychiatrist working with families my professional advice is to delete WhatsApp family groups especially with extended relatives, in-laws.
Those units which are already dysfunctional this is another level where disquiet develops.

Patient: I'm on Antidepressants
Physician: Why?
What do you mean why, the person has a common medical condition and is being treated with prescription drugs
Did you sleep walk through pre med and med school?
It is not ok for a health professional to be ignorant and an idiot

applies to all but especially to those in the medical and para medical field - qualification not withstanding
A 20 yo told by a "counselor" to forgive and forget trauma... another said to move back in with the abuser to keep the family together...
I'm going to track these people down and check their "qualifications"
A young man described what was clear sexual harassment at work place but it hadn't struck him to categorize it under it - coz he's a man.
Hasn't been able to go back to any kind of work since the last 3 months
We must do better with our men, they are victims of gender roles too
A young person talking casually about being in therapy, about partner's therapy, discussing medications.. Yes, a privileged few but brings hope that mental health and psychiatric care are being normalized by these millennials and Gen Zs
Other medical specialists will go to all other colleagues and accept sub-optimal treatments from for their Psychiatric symptoms but will not consult a Psychiatrist.
UG/PG training has let them down if their level of knowledge (ignorance) and stigma is at par with lay people

Works contributing to health, education and social equalities was always something of a second nature.
To see that acknowledged and appreciated by others and to be so honoured by being invited to hoist the national flag is undeniably epic.

We must stop normalising the almost invisible emotional abuse of women by the husband and/or the in-laws. That kind of trauma seldom gets recognised let alone diagnosed and treated.
Women are even judged and blamed for causing "drama" because she can't "forget" the "past"...
Sleep is fascinating
Not only that it's my preferred state of being & favorite activity 😁 but the multitude of different activities going on in the brain with healthy adequate sleep. The mechanisms, their critical role in wellbeing and illness
Here's to reducing sleep deficit
Me - when are you coming home for Eid. We'll keep the door open, you sit near it, we'll sit away.
Nephew (KEM Resident) - Idk if it's a good idea for me to come at all. It's irresponsible. Im working in Covid ICU
We owe so much to these young 20 something Drs

And you call out other men on their misogyny
Congratulations, you are fighting for equality and a better world for yourself

Also... Wow, cool, good only
And of course... Kuch bhi, Yaar, yeh kya hai

A young person under my care needed support and asked a friend if they were available and ok emotionally before the conversation
So proud of these young people figuring out self care while being empathetic and compassionate to others
A patient of mine has been struggling with insight...came across some videos during the recent awareness drive on 24th on World Schizophrenia Day...is now happier to take meds and is more open to sharing the delusions.

It's like each couple has their own language that no one else gets and might not even need words and the same couple needs an interpreter for some basic communication.
Build that language and find that interpreter.
New or increase in preexisting symptoms of anxiety and depression during or post viral (any, including Covid) infections are common, triggered by activation of the immune system.
These may require psychiatric interventions.

A person passed away recently after a long battle with multiple medical conditions. I wasnt part of the last health care team. I'm grateful to the family for letting me know.

Amazing achievement for mental health. When you educate a mother about how to take care of herself, she saves herself and teaches it to the rest of the family and community

A short film scripted & enacted by psychiatrists shot on phones in difft citiess in lockdown.
1st prize in a contest by Indian Psychiatric Society.
Shows family h/o depression, suicide triggered by loss of job in lockdown, recovery with treatment...
If no one "commits cardiac arrest" then no one "commits suicide"
High time everyone, especially in medicine (& media) stop using this pejorative term describing death due to suicides
Difficult conversations with grown men about childhood sexual abuse and trauma... So many of them, like all victims and survivors think it's somehow their fault or it wasn't a big deal or they asked for it...
Loss of a loved one or someone close is always difficult and no is prepared for it.
When we lose someone to suicide it, it can bring with it a lot of emotional conflicts, and complicated responses
