The Chichester Psalms are sung entirely in Hebrew, which was a new challenge for the cathedral choirs, and another difficulty of the music was Bernstein's complex rhythms, such as the 7/4 meter of his setting of Psalm 100.

A global star after West Side Story, Hussey requested music that would contain something of the popular musical's spark. Bernstein kept to his word, and composed Psalm settings that he describes as retaining an "old-fashioned sweetness along with its more violent moments.”

The piece came into being as a commission from the Dean of Chichester, Walter Hussey, for a performance at the Southern Cathedrals Festival. On 31 July 1965 Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester Cathedral Choirs united to sing the piece. .

We're about to begin our second concert at Seoul's Lotte Concert Hall of our tour with our Composer-in-Association Joe Hisaishi, featuring his Symphonic Suite from The Boy and the Heron, his Harp Concerto with Emmanuel Ceysson, and Symphony No.3, 'Metaphysica'.
