I've been surprised that the future energy demands of AI have not been discussed much in climate-energy spaces. Or maybe I'm missing something?
An AI-supported search requires 10X the computing costs of a standard internet search... Data centers use 1-1.5% of global electricity, but MIT estimates they may use up to 21% by 2030. There are currently 5,375 data centers in the US and efficiency gains are stalling:
