Wow! I found a screenshot from Penguin Chat. Penguin Chat later became Club Penguin. This is a great example of slowly starting with the core idea and adding more.
One of the many key features of Club Penguin was parties. Every month we launched a new party for penguins to explore. The challenge was creating parties that appealed to many different players. Each party included spaces to role play, items collect, minigames and stories.
Today Club Penguin is 15 years old. What an amazing journey. So many talented and creative people helped bring this world to life.

A couple years ago, I made a pitch for a two room Club Penguin party. This entire pitch was created in a couple days. I really believe small limited time events would be very popular online.

The key to great worlds is creating spaces for people to gather. The space needs to spark a shared connection. During COVID lockdowns I had an idea to host a virtual Grad.
Just reading through one of the early design documents for the Club Penguin Trading Card Game. This would later be known as CardJitsu. I love how simple this game was.
Many of the kids that played Club Penguin are graduating this year. Sadly many of them will not have a Grad celebration this year. I decided to create a little Grad event online. Starting today at 3pm PDT
Hey
#ClubPenguin
fans. What do you think is the one core feature that makes Club Penguin Club Penguin? Meaning if you removed it, it would not be Club Penguin anymore. Thanks for your help.
Great progress last night. I was able to get both the room and the character working. The props in the room now sort with the character. Next is collisions.

I am really impressed with the Party Parrot World. The fans are leading all the design and creative decisions for this project. Follow

I was asked today if I would ever consider crowdfunding a new virtual world like Club Penguin? I don't know. What are your thoughts?

That took a little longer than I expected. I finally got multiple hamsters moving around in the same room. Next step is to build a simple login so you can play around! Learn more:
Hey
@BoxCritters
fans! Clothing items are coming along nicely. Let me know what you think of the pirate hamster and his friend the kung-fu sock monkey?
Great news
@BoxCritters
fans! It took longer then expected but hired a number of full-time super talented people to help build the BETA. More news in the coming days.
Truthfully. I had no idea this would work. Many have asked what makes Box Critters different than Club Penguin? Well here is an example of 2 new features. Large Rooms and multiple levels. I look forward to launching the Halloween event this week.
My first Box Critters experiment is now online. Create an account, become a hamster, move around and say “hello”. I look forward to adding more in my second experiment. Play now:
Busy building my first HTML5 room. The room was created in Adobe Animate and exported as a texture atlas. I am then rendering the room in HTML5 with CreateJS. Next is to get the Critters moving around and depth sorting with the props in the room.

No regrets. Disney helped Club Penguin expand world wide and introduced millions of children to our exciting little world. I'm sad that it ended but I am confident it will one day return.
Ignore the Penguin. I’m just tinkering around with a couple ideas for 2019. My plan for 2019 is to continue developing a simple MMO system for creating virtual worlds. Keep sending me your feedback! What do you think makes a great virtual world?
Happy Monday! I am working on a number of new worlds. Here is a quick sample of Space World which is the first world powered by the Hideaway engine. The same engine that is powering
@PlayPartyParrot
A number of people asked why
@BoxCritters
has so few rooms in 2 years. Please remember it took 5 years from the launch of Experimental Penguins to Penguin Chat to become Club Penguin. Then Club Penguin took many more years to become the world you love today. This is a journey
Wow!! There is over 200 players online right now. Club Penguin had a limit of 100 users per room. Awesome. Thanks for helping build a new world for another generation.
I don’t remember if I shared this? I am super excited about this. The twins have started working on the ships. Ships will allow you and your friends (clan) to explore the Box Critters world. You and your friends will be able to upgrade and customize your ship.
Merry Christmas Everyone! I thought I would post a little surprise today. Long before Club Penguin, I created a little world with Flash 4 called Experimental Penguins. Enjoy! Play a little history:

I thought i would share some very early concept art for
@BoxCritters
. My original idea was to literally use boxes but later decided on more of a little people character.
Something unique about Club Penguin was that we had the big goal of launching localized content on the same day world-wide. As a team we believed fans from around the world should not have to wait for parties or events in their own language.
Club Penguin was created before the smartphone. For the first couple years I had a pager. The servers would send me messages when something went wrong.

I have been experimenting with an idea to play YouTube videos within a virtual world for awhile now. For CritterCon we included a number of fan short films. Still lots of bugs, but i look forward to finding a solution.
Another amazing week. The
@BoxCritters
team continues to work on the Christmas Event. We are planning a new room and a new item every day starting December 12th. Sadly our quest is a little behind schedule. We moving our life-RPG experiment to early January.
What a great week! Here are a number of things that I have been working on. Box Critters continues! Got the first room and character working. Rethinking Epic Snails! Exploring an idea for a new cooperative board game.
My apologies everyone. I just heard about Blackout Tuesday and we want to respect this event and the voices that need to be heard. Our little Grad event will begin tomorrow at 3pm PDT.
#BlackoutTuesday
Did you know that 20% of Box Critter users play on a mobile device. I spent some time on the weekend learning more about mobile HTML5 and ideas for the smaller screen. I hope to have a mobile version in a couple weeks.
#boxcritters
Hey look it’s a login screen! I still need to add the nicknames below the critter. Once I get this done the first experiment will be ready for testing. Remember the first experiment will have one room and one critter. Have a great night!
@rocketsnail
I was just digging through the HTML files of
@BoxCritters
and found the BG and FG files. Made this beta party room design with a jump animation of a hamster w/ a beta hat. Hope you enjoy! (Notice the glass jar).
Reworking the hamster critter. For those interested. The hamster is created in Adobe Illustrator and exported as individual PNG images. The images are then packed into a single spritesheet and rendered in HTML5.
I was asked how we created Card-Jitsu. Might need to post a blog to share the longer story. To summarize. I had always wanted to make a paper, rock scissors game. The original was for the pirates. But the idea worked better for ninjas.
