Maybe space resources can help Earth survive. But, like the Polynesians who settled the Pacific, that's really not the primary reason humanity wishes to explore & settle this new ocean, the depths of space. (Quote below is from Christina Thompson's excellent book Sea People.)
"...Occasionally, there is famine or some other type of trouble, but usually it is a matter of chiefly ambition or pride." (Important. I've often been told the reason Polynesians explored & settled the Pacific is a desperate need for resources. Polynesians' own stories disagree.)

A reason why a SpaceX IPO coupled with profitable massive in space infrastructure isn’t dumb is that if something happens to Elon, infrastructure is still there to fund trips to Mars’ surface for $100-1000/kg, without relying on billionaire’s largesse. Elon securing legacy.
I don’t think billionaires should be the only ones leading space settlement either. But a major reason they are is that people rejected the idea of space settlement led by the public sector.

Ottawa and Alberta sign an MOU for a pipeline through BC, but opposition could stop it. What does this mean for Canada's economy? You'll want to hear this episode.

@mikusingularity You often complain that literary works treat space as an extension of a cyberpunk-style worldview. But it seems you just stubbornly believe that the future is bright. Let me see who is leading the field ... Oh, Elon and Bezos, I'm sure they must be very kind to their workers.

Three and a half years ago, @neelkunjur and I decided to go from being Brothers, to being Co-Founders. Today, we’re excited to announce that @K2SpaceCo has raised a $250M Series C at a $3B valuation. This round comes on the heels of $500M in signed contracts across commercial and

I mean yeah the Japanese were the bad guys in WWII. My only problem is the historical inaccuracy in portraying the communists as the ones who pushed them back, when in reality it was the KMT who did the vast majority of the fighting while Mao used the war to expand rural control

Zohran Mamdani’s “Community Safety” team is full of activists who call cops “violence workers,” want prisons “obsolete,” and vow to shrink the NYPD. New Yorkers are test subjects in what may become the largest anti-policing experiment in the world. My latest for @CityJournal

Anti-AI people will say shit like "AI should help cure cancer not make art!" and then chimp out when you show them AI helping cure cancer:
I was at an event on AI for science yesterday, a panel discussion here at NeurIPS. The panelists discussed how they plan to replace humans at all levels in the scientific process. So I stood up and protested that what they are doing is evil. Look around you, I said. The room is

American higher education discourse these days is a bit of a weird mix between “college admissions is a nuclear arms race kids are scheduling out 24-7-365 beginning in second grade” and “nobody at Harvard knows how to read anymore.”
Parenting norms in South Korea are apparently insane. American society has been trending in the same direction and we should think about ways to reverse this trend. The stakes aren't actually as high as a lot of parents think they are.

It actually is partially a skill issue. There are some people in Oceania that learned at a young age how to shrink their pupils to pin pricks when under water, so your eye can see detail in spite of being out of focus, like with a pinhole camera. The Moken people.
Why do movies and TV shows keep insisting that people can open their eyes underwater and see clearly? Or is this a skill issue on my end? Is there something wrong with my eyes specifically?
