We synthesised hypercrosslinked polymers with varying fluorine contents and surface areas up to 1750 m²/g. We tested their uptake of solvents like toluene & DCE, reaching >15 g/g adsorption. Performance correlated to porosity, not hydrophobicity.

New paper in RSC Appl. Poly.! We made porous polymers for oil adsorption. 🧽🛢️ Turns out, hydrophobic fluorine moieties didn't help, just good old-fashioned porosity. They’re reusable, have high capacities, and can selectively separate oil from water.

We used confined polymerisation to create butterfly-wing-inspired nanostructures 🦋. Our fabrics were capable of 97% light absorption, 85% intrinsic photothermal efficiency, and also work in salty seawater!

📢 New paper in Advanced Science! We report low-cost fabrics for solar-driven interfacial evaporation. Just 1 m² of fabric can produce ~4 L of clean water per hour!💧. Big thanks to Mingqing (our visiting CSC student) & her supervisor in Shanghai, Yaozu.

Sometimes simple approaches work out! We thermally oxidised a hypercrosslinked polymer (essentially just baked at 300 °C 👨‍🍳) to improve its hydrophilicity and, hence, atmospheric water harvesting ability. Check it out:.

Building from our Small paper, we report a sulfonated COF for atmospheric water harvesting 💧. Sulfonation shifted water uptake onset to <5% relative humidity. Another fruitful collab with @LabKleitz. Out now in ChemSusChem:
