Stupid question. If a black hole is a region of space where escape velocity exceeds c, I understand why light can't escape, but a space craft which is propelled does not need to reach escape velocity, so could you use propulsion to escape?

As a test I sent a few links to online brands to my wife on WhatsApp. She's on a different IP address and using an iPhone. She doesn't open the links and doesn't normally use those sites. She then gets adverts for them showing up in her Facebook feed. What's going on?
