Jim Harbaugh’s tenure at Michigan was like a play in three acts. It could have ended as a tragedy. Instead, it ended with a parade. And the last act made it all worthwhile.
Jim Harbaugh says it was Aidan Hutchinson who suggested dedicating the game to Oxford shooting victim Tate Myre. Late in the game, the team looked at the scoreboard and realized they had 42 points. “God works in mysterious ways,” Hutchinson said.
Jim Harbaugh says he got a text from John Madden saying yesterday's game was "as good an offensive line performance as he's seen." Harbaugh said he shared the text with offensive line coach Sherrone Moore.
Jim Harbaugh, on moving forward with plans for fall football season: "COVID is part of our society. It wasn’t caused by football or caused by sports. There’s no expert view right now that I’m aware of that sports is going to make that worse."
Harbaugh sounds raspy but insists he’s not sick. “I’m the iron wall that viruses bash against and shatter,” he says. Says he’ll “do some more pushups and eat an apple.”
I will say, it’s weird to read headlines like “Team X had 75 COVID cases” and square that with the perception that the Big Ten is the league that bungled this worse than anyone.
No word yet on a resolution with Michigan and the Big Ten, but after talking with several people today, I’m under the impression that it will be tough for the Big Ten to take action today based on the issues raised by Michigan and Jim Harbaugh’s attorney last night.
Mike Morris says Penn State had "Twitter fingers" this week, and it came to a head in the tunnel at half. "They wanted to talk at halftime because they got lucky," he said.
Jim Harbaugh: "Two of our players were assaulted. You saw the one video, the 10 on 1. Pretty bad." Says one player has a nasal injury, possibly a broken nose. AD Warde Manuel will address with the authorities, Harbaugh says.
Jim Harbaugh told a story today about getting home from Wisconsin, unpacking in his office and seeing freshmen J.J. McCarthy, Andrel Anthony and Donovan Edwards heading out to the practice field for more work. “I took a picture of it,” he said. “It’s that kind of group.”
Jim Harbaugh was asked if he had any issues with players planting the flag at midfield after the game.
"I want to get that flag," he says. "I want to get that flag and put it in our museum."
Forget everything else he's done or hasn't done: Donovan Edwards has three runs that are going on Michigan's all-time highlight reel. Crazy career for that guy.
If Hunter Dickinson returns to Michigan next year, I assume it will be a similar deal. He's a great college player with a marketable brand. Unless you're a surefire first-round pick, there's something to be said for maximizing the college experience.
Juwan Howard: "I can come with a thousand excuses, but I’m not. I take full ownership for my actions." Says he's spent the past two weeks "soul searching" and sought therapy. "I want to be a better person, and I want to be a better coach."
Blake Corum: “As a man, I wouldn’t have felt good ganging up on a couple players. That’s not how I roll.”
Adds that he experienced two losses to Michigan State and understands the frustration of losing a rivalry game.
Jim Harbaugh said Michigan’s players were so ready to play that they asked if they could skip media day. “Believe me, I tried to get out of it and I couldn’t,” Harbaugh said.
From Michigan:
“Commissioner Petitti’s hasty action today suggests that this is more about reacting to pressure from other Conference members than a desire to apply the rules fairly and impartially.” 1/3
J.J. McCarthy says Michigan adjusted its practice schedule before the Rose Bowl after not playing its best the CFP the past two years. The goal is avoid mental fatigue and “paralysis by analysis,” he said.
I don't know how much to read into these things but if there's one player on Michigan's team who seems to benefit from having Jim Harbaugh around, it's J.J. McCarthy.
Jim Harbaugh says he doesn’t want to speak on Mel Tucker’s suspension but notes Brenda Tracy has spoken to Michigan’s team in the past and he supports her work.
Harbaugh: “I know Brenda Tracy, respect her a lot.”
Amorion Walker's recruitment was a tough one to read. Despite being committed to Notre Dame since March, the 6-4 receiver picked Michigan today. An SEC-caliber talent from Louisiana is heading to Ann Arbor.
Jim Harbaugh mentioned that this Michigan team is different because it doesn’t flinch. Dax Hill: “The last few years we’ve done enough flinching. We didn’t want to feel that way any longer.”
Not gonna get into a big to-do about this, but is the theory that the local authorities did Michigan a favor by … charging a star player with a crime three days before the Big Ten championship game? Is that what we’re going with?
Jim Harbaugh has discovered the wonders of the multi-game view on YouTubeTV. Said he was in “hog heaven” watching Notre Dame-Ohio State and other games Saturday night.
Jim Harbaugh said he's "all for" the expanded 12-team CFP and reiterated that he thinks players should get a cut of the Big Ten's new TV deal. "Seven-point-something billion? That's a lot of billions, a lot of money. I think the players should receive a revenue share."
Jim Harbaugh says FB Ben Mason addressed the team before Joe Milton's first start. The message: "Joe, this is your night. We're going to block, we’re going to catch, we’re going to do everything in our power to make you successful."
The NCAA rule is about in-person scouting. The Big Ten policy is about sportsmanship and the integrity of the game. The Big Ten has to prove a violation of the latter without making a statement of fact on the former. It's a fine needle to thread.
The month after Jim Harbaugh's departure was open season for schools trying to raid Michigan's roster, with one starter offered roughly $1.75 million to enter the portal.
Michigan weathered the storm, but the work isn't done.
Really candid stuff from former Michigan TE Jake Butt on the aftermath of his knee injury in the 2016 Orange Bowl. We also talked about the greatest NIL campaign that never was.
Jim Harbaugh says the media attention surrounding the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry has gotten out of hand and hopes people will keep the game in perspective. “I think that is very manufactured for the TV show people want to see. It’s not healthy for the student athletes.”
Grilled by teammate DJ Turner, Mike Morris admits his sister Milan is a better shooter than he is.
Morris: “I will never say that on record, but Milan’s a better shooter than me.”
Turner: “It’s on record.”
Since this is getting some traction: Harbaugh was pretty deferential overall to the experts. If a decision is made not to play, he indicated he'd support it. Don't think he was implying there's no risk, only that he's comfortable with how the risks are being managed. FWIW.
Jim Harbaugh, on moving forward with plans for fall football season: "COVID is part of our society. It wasn’t caused by football or caused by sports. There’s no expert view right now that I’m aware of that sports is going to make that worse."
If you want to know how things have changed … Mark Schlissel definitely was not tweeting about Jim Harbaugh’s contract negotiations last winter. Santa Ono, Michigan’s new president, is a lot more engaged.
Tony Petitti's dilemma got more complex with the allegations that other teams shared Michigan's signs.
It doesn't excuse anything Michigan is accused of doing, but it's harder to claim that the integrity of Big Ten games was fundamentally compromised.
Harbaugh clarifies that he’s not sure whether he’ll testify Friday. “That’s not my dance floor,” he says. “I’ve watched a lot of shows. I’ve watched Judge Judy a lot.”
Sherrone Moore says Michigan “caught wind of things that could be going on” and had players stop watching film outside Schembechler Hall in November. Does it impact preparation?
“It might help, because the next thing they would do is play Call of Duty,” he said.
Iowa State fan at Orlando airport baggage claim: “I’ve had so much beer today, I can’t believe it.” This is like Kelly’s in Westport during the Big 12 tournament.
Rod Moore, an Ohio native and former three-star recruit, reflecting on making a game-clinching interception in what he called "one of the biggest games in college football history."
"I was on the field like, 'I just called game. I did that.'"
Excited to be in Ann Arbor this fall covering Michigan football for The Athletic. For my first piece, I wrote about truck stops, polar expeditions and Major League pitcher Chris Haney.
Aidan Hutchinson saw this happening before most people believed it was possible. Thanks to Hutchinson and Hassan Haskins, the twin pillars of Michigan’s team, the Ohio State curse is broken.
“This is the best moment of my life.”
CFP committee chairman Boo Corrigan says on ESPN that the scouting scandal at Michigan "wasn't any part of our discussions" in putting the Wolverines No. 3. "It's an NCAA issue," he says. "It's not a CFP issue."
Can confirm that Wink Martindale has agreed to become Michigan’s defensive coordinator. Big swing for Sherrone Moore, who prioritized hiring an established DC and got one of the biggest names out there.
Jim Harbaugh on his suspension: “I went to a place I’ve never been. … Seeing the game in a different way, through a different lens, I think it’s made me a better coach.” Says he’s implemented new policies to “make sure I never get sidelined again.”
Former U-M player Gilvanni Johnson says he reported Anderson's conduct to Bo, but nothing came of it. Later, coaches used threats of visiting Anderson as a motivational tactic. "Only now do I realize how crazy it was to threaten rape as a way to make players work harder."
And, the kicker: “To ensure fairness in the process, we intend to seek a court order, together with Coach Harbaugh, preventing this disciplinary action from taking effect." 3/3
Five-star QB Jadyn Davis announces his commitment to Michigan on ESPN.
"I’m a guy that’s going to walk in and help build this class at the school I pick and build it to the No. 1 recruiting class in the country," he says.
Ben Herbert has been described as the most important person in Michigan’s program. Sherrone Moore was fighting to retain him, but Jim Harbaugh tends to get what he wants. Herbert’s departure adds to a lengthy to-do list in Moore’s first week as coach.
Hate to say it, but if Semaj Morgan was going to be returning punts in the Rose Bowl, he probably should have been doing it in September. Lack of reps there is really showing.
Lived in Kansas/KC area for 29 years. Royals sucked every year and the Chiefs always choked in the playoffs.
In the six years I've been gone: 2 pennants, World Series win, 2 AFC title games and a Super Bowl. Been a good run.
On the potential timing of elevating Sherrone Moore, university policy requires that jobs be posted for a minimum of seven days, but departments can request a waiver based on "legitimate business needs."
.
Jim Harbaugh appeared on a Fiesta Bowl call tonight and was asked about reports that he might entertain NFL interest. Harbaugh said he “will be back enthusiastically coaching the Wolverines in 2023.”
“By taking this action at this hour, the Commissioner is personally inserting himself onto the sidelines and altering the level playing field that he is claiming to preserve.” 2/3
A couple notes from Phil Martelli:
— Juwan Howard can have contact w/ the team during his suspension and addressed players via text.
— AD Warde Manuel came to practice yesterday and prepped the team for what was coming. Martelli called it a “masterclass” in leadership.
