DACA was never meant to be a permanent solution. With the courts threatening to revoke this longstanding policy, we must take action. Congress must have the courage to bring our forgotten dreams into reality, to let us be citizens of the only land we have known as home.
I believe wholeheartedly in the American Dream. And I believe in our Dreamers. Today, on the 11th anniversary of DACA, I join Byron, Rex, Juana, and Norma in calling on Congress to provide all Dreamers with permanent protections including a pathway to citizenship.

the data transformation wars are over. dbt, sdf, and sqlmesh are all joined together in one table

GPAS is very cool! My original intuition here was that the residual stream should generally be free of operations. But looks like as long as the gradient flow is preserved, the residual stream can be subject to transformations.
GPAS: Accelerating Convergence of LLM Pretraining via Gradient-Preserving Activation Scaling Scales down the intermediate activations while keeping their gradients unchanged. This leaves information in the activations intact and avoids the gradient vanishing problem associated

i visited the airbnb office for the first time since leaving in 2020 and i’m immediately greeted by a colleague (from my former sf team!) who happened to be in nyc such a serendipitous encounter with the past. i’m glad someone still remembers me after half a decade :)

i wrote about the new freedoms i’ve exercised since transitioning my undocumented status to permanent residency in the states, and my thought process on joining and learning at the @recursecenter

Some progress from @recursecenter: we have a lovely study group doing Stanford's CS336 The material (from just three lectures) has been so great in building intuition for all the different model matmuls After 2 weeks, I implemented the transformer architecture in ~250 LOC 🤯

small life update: i’m starting off the summer with a batch at the @recursecenter! currently studying distributed systems and large model systems :)

ty, the newly announced python type checker from @astral_sh, is already ranking above ruff and uv in search queries the people want it!

@GeoffreyHuntley well at least the pylance issue is going to be solved very soon (thanks @charliermarsh) https://t.co/Llv8jTZnHh
ty, our upcoming static type checker and language server for Python, is accidentally on the front page of HN. We're rapidly closing in on an initial "experimental preview release"...

at my previous role in data infra, I worked lots on product + API framework. i kept up with the (adjacent) developments in the industry's application layers but I think I should've went one more abstraction deeper, into the underlying database internals, architectures, etc

this is so true — all this is making me wish i studied more distributed systems in undergrad. but now is great time to learn more than ever https://t.co/A4W0vfDT1K
A major mistake I made in my undergrad is that I focused way too much on mathematical lens of computing - computability, decidability, asymptotic complexity etc. And too little on physical lens - energy/heat of state change, data locality, parallelism, computer architecture. The

i've been self studying more technical material in the past few weeks (Stanford's CS336, MIT's 6.824, Crafting Interpreters, DDIA) first, what a privilege it is to be a student again. second, there really is no substitute for learning by doing (it's really keeping me honest)

ok it’s not only an LSP recession. dear lord (from @GeoffreyHuntley’s incredible article: Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture)
