What is distinct about reproductive politics in the Salvadoran context? How have feminist activists engaged with human rights frameworks, and with what outcomes? Don’t miss
@resmythy
discussing her research in this new episode
Love how universities just suggest we do some yoga and drink more water to keep our mental health up. How about decent pay, conditions, stability, security, smaller class sizes, and a fulsome rejection of the neoliberal approach instead? Just a fun lil quirky lil thought.
Someone please explain to me using very small words and maybe pictures how the university having to pay £160 for flights that should cost £50 because it has to use Key Travel makes any sense.
I've been dithering about tweeting this for a few weeks because 1 wanted to get the paperwork finalised and 2 it's a rough time in academia and the world BUT I have the incredible good fortune to announce that I AM DR REBECCA SMYTH, LECTURER IN LAW AT BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY.
Can't quite believe I'm chairing a panel on women's rights as human rights at a major international conference marking the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration featuring, among others,
@shaimabdelkarim
and
@AliceLouStorey
.♀️🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
Now that I'm at the airport, I feel it's just about safe to celebrate that I'm off to
@CLACS_Illinois
for the next six weeks as a visiting researcher thanks to a BA/Leverhulme small research grant. Grateful, excited, daunted. Champaign-Urbana, let's be having you!
Very excited that I've been accepted to present at the Pregnancy and the Law workshop in September hosted by
@SCC_Soton
. Look at all the cool people who'll be there!
Very excited to be on my way to this today. I'm going to OXFORD. I'm going to LEARN and MEET COOL PEOPLE and EAT BEN'S COOKIES and go to the ASHMOLEAN and look out for golden COMPASSES and subtle KNIVES and amber SPYGLASSES
The 5th of July we launch a new research network into the practice and philosophy of childbirth. The Philosophy of Birth Network is open to all working with birth; theoretically and practically.
"I long for active political alliances in Germany that stand against anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Blackness under one banner, in solidarity with all oppressed." Really beautiful piece.
"For white Germans to stand for the rights of Palestinians to life, health, safety, and freedom, they would need to study our world from outside Germany’s myopic narratives."
From Prof. Dr. Sabine Broeck's "Staatsraison: Dispatch From Germany":
Unbelievably excited about and grateful to be part of this conference organised by
@conlonce
@drartypants
&
@dnduffy
and featuring, among others *deep breath*
Drunk with power, I am chairing the legal perspectives on abortion panel for
#AbortionAtTheBorderlines
. Delighted to have the opportunity to hear about
@ECRomanis
and
@sabrinakgermain
's nascent research on bringing RJ to abortion law&provis in GB
Academics rightly highlight how nasty some peer reviewers can be (and what a pain the whole peer review process can be) but I want to thank both
@SignsJournal
and
@FLS_journal
for how thoughtful, constructive, and insightful their editors and peer reviewers have been.
The magic of
#ReproJusticePostCOVID
extended onto the train&beyond! ✨
@LJ_Avery
v kindly shared the drinkses&we all had some amazing chats about disability justice, human rights, museum/curating,
@nobordersmcr
&how to mix it all together. I sense some fun collaborations ahead 🥳
Made friends with some girls on my first train home who had, coincidentally, just come from a different conference and they shared their bevs with me 🥹
Great to be able to attend the
@freesafelegal
#TooManyBarriers
launch. Things are going in the right direction, but it's deeply angering and upsetting that we're not there yet in terms of safe, straightforward, legal, local access to abortion in Ireland.
Had a delightful first day of induction at BCU. I made sure to teach the students the importance of snaffling as much free food as possible. My work here is done 😎
I may be on annual leave, but you'd better believe I'm attending Eva Bredler's talk on a relational approach to obstetric violence hosted by Oxford's Medical Law and Ethics discussion group
@evmabre
@MLE_DG
. Sure I'm in my llama pyjamas, but you all don't need to know that...
Easing the pain of not being at
@ReproJusticeCam
anymore by sitting in on a few
@NNMHRmed
conference panels. Currently learning loads at the Histories of Colonialism and the Critical Medical Humanities panel

Did not feel v feminist spending 20 mins figuring out what to wear tomorrow that is suited to the weather (rainsunhumidity)&the event&a day of train travel, esp when event in question is a feminist one. If anyone wants to compliment my trousers tomorrow, please do. For feminism.
And I get to do it all over again at Abortion at the Borderlines next week thanks to
@femperspectives
,
@lea_happ
and
@SaskiaZielinska
?! Overload, pleasure overload () my only request is that someone helps me get a pañuelo verde 🙏
What a beautiful and fulfilling two days at
#ReproJusticePostCOVID
. Thank you so much to
@aioshaug
and
@RSanchezRivera1
for putting together a welcoming and thought provoking space! My brain and heart are full 💚💜💗
Delira and excira to have been accepted to present at the
@SLASLatAm
in April 2022! I'll be talking about the campaign for abortion rights and reproductive freedom in El Salvador, attending every other panel I can, and stealing all the pre-packaged biscuits.
Feels a bit surreal to go from reading Strasbourg Observers blogs when doing my LLM to writing for them! My post looks at why it is very, very good that the Court is criticising forced abortion, but that it could do better...
In today's post,
@resmythy
argued recent
@ECHR_CEDH
judgments on forced abortion represent the unwillingness/inability of the Court to draw upon the full range of international human rights standards regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights.
We're hoping to put together a panel on the theme of rights, justice, ethics. And we might take it on the road to SLAS in Amsterdam too if you're so inclined!
Do you research reproductive rights and justice in the Greater Caribbean or Central American (and) are you interested in presenting on a Panel at Re-worlding Reproduction in South Africa (Sept 2024). Please contact me and
@resmythy
(Thanks!!)
I have written the first draft of the introduction to what will hopefully be my book. Now if that isn't reason for a jaunt to Vienna then I don't know what is (jaunt to Vienna sold separately).
A bit emotional to be here today - something of a homecoming...and to be listening to a feminist, pro-choice Provost talk about the importance of scholar activism? Yes please!
On a panel encompassing feminist theology, experimental philosophy, srt and literature. I'm bringin' the human rights (law). Damn I love feminism
#talkingbodies2019
Thanks to
@AHRI_Network
for welcoming me to the Exec Board! Will do my best to contribute to its high standards &inclusive atmosphere, & to do what I can to make space for ERCs (esp PhD & precarious), Global Majority, LGBTQI+, & disabled academics, activists & practitioners
What a lovely way to come back to the heaving email inbox: an invitation to present at a conference in Hannover in November and the news that I get to work on an amazing PhD project with
@MelCruzL
!
I have the immense privilege of being at EFLAC. About to do yoga under some trees. Even the tortoises are feminist.
Tengo el inmenso privilegio de estar al EFLAC. Al punto de hacer yoga bajo arboles. Incluso las tortugas se suman a la lucha feminista
#eflac15
It's a Saturday night, so you'd better believe your girl is bitching about abortion in international human rights law, yes, this is definitely the future I envisioned for myself
@soper_mr
I just heard "the special catalogue" in the voice Bill Bailey does for "the laminated book of dreams", so thank you for making me laugh at the absurdity of it all 😄
To end a really great week, thanks to star admin staff doing battle w/Key Travel, I'm going to the Encuentro Feminista in November!/Para terminar una muy buena semana, gracias al trabajo del equipo administrativo de BCU, me voy al encuentro feminista en El Salvador en noviembre!
"Why am I so tired?" I wonder after just being at a major conference, moving house for the nth time, trying to keep two research projects ticking over and get another one up and running, constantly switching between tasks, and being aware of current affairs
Experiencing acute Twitter fatigue, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the Q&A and Anne Eleanor Roosevelt's closing address sans technology. Big thanks and well done to
@AHRI_Network
, the volunteer army and my PhD mamma
@KMSonIntlLaw
for a great conference
#AHRI2018
❤️
I WILL defy the three o'clock slump and enjoy the last panel of today - how could I not with such a cool array of subjects and speakers?! Reproductive autonomy and healthcare in COVID-19 pandemic, let's be having you
#reproductivejusticepostcovid
From one conference buzz to another: after
@AHRI_Network
's weekend of human rights and ceilidhing, it's time for feminism, craftivism and...that goose girl statue in Göttingen?
@atgender
#EFRC10
Excited for
@nayluxx
keynote 'Singing for Abortoin Rights in Latin America' - definitely agree that this conference has been a vibrant and welcoming environment
#reprojusticepostcovid
So excited to be at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Law's

Just casually listening to my brother Tim
@el_fodongo
MacGabhann chatting about his novel
#CallHimMine
on the
@RyanTubridyShow
of a Monday morning totes normal we didn't use to listen to Ryan weekday mornings driving to school & talk about how him&Tim were both skinny&smart&witty
So impressed by the students involved in the peace process simulation as part of
#FCL19
. And extra extra impressed by
@auttonwise
for putting it together.
Today was wonderful and the next two days no doubt will be too, but the most important thing is that two random twentysomethings at the tram stop who I got chatting to think that I and my work are cool.
Panel 2A now on Pregnancy: Theoretical Approaches featuring
@EBrodeala
, ✨ME✨,
@HeloiseRobinson
and Macarena Iribarne. Am in some v impressive company here.
One of the weirder results of doing a PhD has been learning that I have a passionate, irrational love of and loyalty to certain referencing styles - and an equally passionate, irrational hatred of others.
The joy & freedom in this performance. Whenever I think of her inner & outer torment, the sneering at her for what she said & did (& she was so often bang on the money & years ahead), I just watch this video. Going to be watching it a lot today.
#noredundancieschester
@UCUChester
I was lucky enough to attend the
@Talking_Bodies
at University of Chester two years ago. Met amazing staff and students. Loved the atmosphere. Its Institute for Gender Studies and other depts deserve more, not less
Really enjoying Jorgelina Loza's presentation on transnational collective action by
@CONLACTRAHO
and similar organisations. Such a joy to learn something new.
#SLAS2022
#SLAS2022
has been the most energising and nourishing intellectual and social experience I've had in far too long. Thank you to all the lovely people who I got to hang out with and learn from the past few days. Roll on SLAS 2023! 💚💜
Blanca Larrin now on how citizenship is being reconfigured by feminist activism - v exciting, resonates deeply with my own work. Will have one heck of a good reading list of conference participants' work by the end of
#SLAS2022
"A person on a boat in the Mediterranean is somehow less of a person than someone walking the streets of Edinburgh" - powerful and shamefully true words from

Thank you to Belinda Thaler for making me and all the attendees look so cool and knowledge and professional. Finally a photo worthy of replacing my Powerpuff self!
Happily ensconced in Howard Lecture theatre for
@cordyf
's panel on RJ beyond academia - 7 presenters going to explain non-academic projects and have a good ol chat
#reprojusticepostcovid
👏👏👏 to
@emily_ottley
for a really interesting and polished presentation on autonomy/decisionmaking as grounds for decriminalising abortion here - I still have much to learn about UK (med) law and it enlightened me on many things
Really looking forward to this - glad I happened to be in d'homeland for it. Also how feminist a week am I having: MUNA and boygenius Monday and now this 🥳
Ridonkulously proud of two of my students for organising this event in support of
@EdinRapeCrisis

Massive thanks to

@RSanchezRivera1
to having me on their ahmahzing podcast
@CuerpaPolitica

@PriyamvadaGopal
Yeah they really don't seem to get the whole she-wouldn't-have-developed-sepsis-if-delivery-could-have-been-expedited thing...thank you so much for tweeting and talking about the referendum today.
@r_solymosi
Ah bless you! <3 Vomit-inducing, isn't? Pretty sure mine can go 360 at this stage, which is something for the CV I suppose. BECAUSE EVERYTHING WE DO MUST BE PUT ON THE CV AND BE WORTHY OF THE CV.
So happy to have discovered
@HFV_LK
tonight at the Grand Social! Not one but two badass young wimmin in the line-up. And two lads. But yknow. WIMMIN IN MUSIC YAAAS.
Very excited for the panel on LGBTQI rights chaired by Andreas R Ziegler, featuring
@victor_madrigal
,
@JuliaE_hrt
, Suhail Abualsameed - your feminist pals stand with and love you ♥️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

MAJOR props to Emma McManus of
@LdnIrishARC
being on a panel with a SPUC representative and being composed, articulate and shooting down his spurious claims. We've already got to, 'But what about the mens?!' and it's only question two.
