The most glorious celebration of French culture, history, diversity, and excellence, with the immense joy and pride to share our heritage and to welcome the World to the City of Light. Wow, just wow.

Unbelievable, unforgettable, incredible. Creativity, originality, excellence, elegance, fashion, passion, harmony in the diversity, modernity celebrating history. Universality.

Countless refs to art, history, Greek mythology, and even video games! The most impressive to me is knowing it would be even richer and more breathtaking if I would get all the references.

M83 when the French delegation arrived could not be more epic for the French astronomer I am! Until the end, I hoped for Daft Punk to appear... in vain. Then I remembered there will be a closing ceremony! And for the Paralympic Games, we will have all this ... one more time!

Finally watched the #OpeningCeremony I wondered why the torch went back on the Seine. And then... THEN! This unforgettable image of the cauldron! An obvious reference to the pioneers of aviation. Until I realized it went back to the exact same place, 241 years later!

Being in the wild, I've only seen small bits of the #OpeningCeremony Looks epic and grandiose, and I can't wait to watch it in full🤩 In the mean time, this opening ceremony is quite good too... #yosemite

Fed up showing always the same videos in conferences,? Make a new one! In a gas-rich clumpy galaxy (maybe like the Milky Way 10 billion years ago), the gaseous structures are very complex and turbulent. Not your grandma's interstellar medium. https://t.co/RCuORbN8Lp

...so the harassment and bullying can continue. When I understood that the law and ethics would never prevail in this uni, I looked for an exit door (and got incredibly lucky to be offered my dream job). But I fear ...

Lund Uni is one of these magical places where moving people around and looking away solve harassment and violence. It hasn't worked for 16 years and 37+ complaints, but you never know! Now astronomy has been shut down and astronomers have been expelled... https://t.co/Aomt7YYewI

#OTD exactly 8 years ago, I saw my very first #northernlights from a plane over Greenland. Many cold nights later, I think my photo techniques have slightly improved 😜

This a reminder that Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) Letters are not only Open Access but free for all astronomers in the world.

#astrosh For three years, my colleague @SyksyRasanen and I have defended ourselves against allegations of aggravated defamation, after we spoke out against the appointment of Christian Ott, whom Caltech had found to have harassed two students. Today, we were acquitted. 1/8

We decorated the @ObsStrasbourg, in front of the @CTS_Strasbourg "Observatoire" tram station, with a 30m-wide galactic panorama made from @ESAGaia Gaia data, using CDS tools. It represents the whole galactic plane between latitudes -6° and +6°.

🆕Excited to announce Arrakihs as the latest member of the @esascience fleet! Set to launch in the early 2030s, this fast-class mission will image faint nearby galaxies, providing important measurements to test open questions in #cosmology. More info 👉 https://t.co/2srmtds0Sj

Now it is official! ESA has just approved our ESA fast-mission ARRAKIHS, devoted to explore stellar halos of nearby Milky Way-like galaxies. This mission was inspired in our deep imaging project with amateur telescopes one decade ago. A dream come true!

For the time in 8 (?) years, I have created an account on a social media #Mastodon Follow me on: ➡️ @renaudflo@mastodon.online (The first ones to follow will likely enjoy witnessing some stupid things I do trying to understand how this new stuff works...)

Sometimes when galaxies meet, one gets scattered in shells around the other. In his first paper 😀, @AstroJPetersson shows how this process strongly alters star formation, even quenching it (without AGN!), and why dense shells cannot form stars in situ.
