Oh hey, what a delightful surprise. Thank you to the folks
@AustinChronicle
for recognizing one of my great passions: fixing other people's TV settings. It is a genuine honor.
Please be nice to people who work at theaters this weekend. Thank them for working all hours. If it’s an eatery, tip well. Do it because the people around you probably won’t. Or do it because you’re nice. I’m not here to judge your intentions.
He's a pro-tip for my fellow man humans: the moment you've used the term "Mary Sue" is the moment you know you've arrived at your worst take of all-time. Please stop embarrassing yourselves.
Y’all got me watching The Last Jedi because nothing says Fourth of July 2018 like the slow, overwhelming encroachment of authoritarianism and a bunch of dudes who don’t get the underlying message.
This 45-second clip is probably going to lead to me spending 3 hours of my Sunday watching RRR for the fifth time.
And they say nothing good happens on this site anymore…
I am calling for a full ban on professional TV critics using the phrase “It’s too dark” until we can figure out what’s going on with the contrast and brightness settings on their televisions.
Things that are great about MIDSOMMAR:
1. Florence Pugh.
2. Henrik Svensson's next-level production design.
3. Pawel Pogorzelski's slow, steady camera that lulls you into a state of calm.
4. Ari Aster meditating intensely about trauma and loss in the most fucked up ways.
It’s gonna take me a few viewings to get anything more than a wet face and an exhausted soul out of that episode. You’re doing it,
#GameofThrones
. You’re really doing it.

#CaptainMarvel
: Tough break for those who voted early. Turns out that Marvel made Top Gun Superman and it’s awesome. A lot of people are gonna like it when they see it.
That new Jordan Peele movie looks amazing. BUT ALSO this trailer is the second most exciting thing I’ve watched today and it’s a lot closer than you’d expect.
It's weird that actors, filmmakers, and most importantly, their teams, are allowing this narrative about The Last Jedi be re-fed by their comments, especially after what happened to one of their co-stars following the release of the movie.
Still one of the most impressive action sequences of the past few years. Definitely the best fight sequence in all of Star Wars. It’s a goddamn barn-burner.
The reason why the M:I - Fallout bathroom fight works so well is that it’s easy to believe these three men genuinely want to hurt each other. The ways it’s filmed and choreographed makes this visceral. Korean/Indonesian actions films do this well.

rewatch notes: I've always loved this shot in "The Lion and the Rose." Very subtle, very graceful. Anette Haellmigk's lens effectively lulls (some of) the audience into a false sense of calm. All while a murder plot is unfolding in front of our eyes.

Imagine what Mueller could do in a room with him for... 7 minutes.
7 minutes, then prison.
I was rejected from film school because I was poor and couldn’t afford the tuition. And because my family didn’t have money and couldn’t take on huge loans, I didn’t get to go. So I started an independent site called Film School Rejects from nothing. But sure, make your jokes.
Which
#GameofThrones
character are you most surprised is still alive heading into S8? Like, who did you think had no chance?
For me, it’s Podrick Payne. No disrespect to my guy. I’m so happy for him. But I was sure he was meat.
*looks left at pile of end of the year screeners for movies I haven’t seen*
*looks right at a copy of Mission: Impossible - Fallout, a movie I’ve already seen and that I could watch 100 times in the next two weeks if I wanted to*
*takes decisive action*
Now playing: BLACK PANTHER, which actually goes there on the fact that the kings of Wakanda stood by while slavery happened. This primes its villain for a really stunning and thoughtful arc and tortures the film's hero. That's filmmaking bravery.
Luca Guadagnino makes films that exist in another world. Plus he takes actors like Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton to these other worlds, where they give mind-body-and-soul level performances.

What is it that you wanted to know about The Night King that
#GameofThrones
didn’t answer?
They showed us:
✔️ Why he was created
✔️ How he was created
✔️ How he was stopped initially
✔️ How he broke through The Wall
✔️ They told us what he wanted
✔️ And showed his demise

-- citing that they're short on time -- which seems like a completely believable answer for when you leave the biggest movie franchise in history before your trilogy ever gets off the ground.
I can't think of a single movie or show that wasn't made instantly and infinitely better with the presence of Michael K. Williams. To lose him at 54 is devastating.
Batman Forever is a movie that views its characters through the lens of their mental health and how they are treated by society. It’s also deeply horny.
RIP Mr. Schumacher. You were a real one.

Get you someone who looks at you the way Michelle Monaghan and Ving Rhames look at each other during the moment in a Mission: Impossible movie where they’re pretty sure they’re about to get blown up by a nuclear bomb.
I see we’re still complaining about people tweeting about Game of Thrones on Sunday night. Here’s a pro-tip: grow up and solve your own problems instead of constantly shitting on everyone’s good time. We get it, you’re super inconvenienced by the cultural event of your lifetime.
ABC reportedly warned the Academy that it would cancel the

Here’s the thing about
#AvengerEndgame
and any emotionally resonant, massively scaled piece of longform entertainment built by thousands of skilled hands:
You think you’re fine. You think it’s just a movie. None of it really matters. You’re fine.
Until you’re not.
This has been one of the most frustrating things about the past few days — how quick publications have been to try and monetize tragedy. This isn’t journalism. MovieWeb isn’t doing any reporting. It’s not even insightful commentary. And they aren’t the only ones. Deeply shameful.
This won't be particularly useful information to anyone but me, but did you know that the film 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' has 170,600 individual frames?
I remain in awe of BLACK PANTHER. It’s a high-wire act of filmmaking. A slick, accessible modern blockbuster made w/ centuries of pent-up cultural rage expressed with beauty and grace and a style that is both futuristic and deeply rooted. I ride or die for this movie forever.
Okay if I only get to pick one snub in this crazy

nomination year it’s fucking Nick Vallelonga getting a screenplay nom over Bo Burnham. Even though we knew it would probably happen. What’s your ONE?
