This is Opal Reef on the #GreatBarrierReef in 2016 and again in 2017. Climate change (and it's consequences) are real. #MyOneScienceTweet

Awesome and so well deserved Tries!
Honored to receive the ICRS World Reef Award @ICRSCoralReefs! It means a lot to be acknowledged where representation is limited. Indonesia has the world's most diverse coral organisms, yet reef science/conservation often go unrecognized. I'm committed to changing this narrative!

Expeditions can be hard to maneuver as a mother & scientist. Intense & exciting to have my essay published in @nytimes exploring how Expeditions can be an Academic Act of Defiance Mapping fungi w/family @spununderground @nytopinion: https://t.co/VMzSxgm6EN (photo 2011, Kenya)

2024 Great Barrier Reef bleaching summary now available: https://t.co/dozHwAGO8i - Fifth mass bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef since 2016 -Very high (60-90% cover bleached) and extreme (>90%) prevalence of coral bleaching in all three regions of the Great Barrier Reef

Meanwhile, @AustralianLabor...we LOVE gas!!! How GOOD is gas?!
It’s great to be in Gladstone with Prime Minister @AlboMP to celebrate @APLNG’s 1000th cargo. Congratulations to Australia Pacific LNG’s partners - @conocophillips @originenergy and Sinopec - & the thousands of employees who made it happen.

🚨 4th MCBE in #Huvadhu, 🇲🇻🚨 #Coralbleaching is on full throttle in #Maldives. After 8 years of recovery from the 3rd Mass Coral Bleaching event, we're facing the 4th Mass Coral Bleaching Event in just 8 years. The resilience of these reefs is being tested once again.

Terrifying graph showing how warm the oceans have been this year, compared to what we’re used to (grey lines). No wonder we’re seeing corals overheating, bleaching and dying right around the planet, from the Caribbean to the Maldives to Australia. #ClimateCrisis
Catastrophic coral #bleaching across the #GreatBarrierReef as @CoralReefWatch confirm today that we’re in the midst of the 4th global coral die-off. If we tolerate this we know it’s our forests, homes & crops next - corals are the canaries in the coalmine

Ocean heat records have been breaking for months. This is the first global evidence of the impacts on sea life.

The 2024 mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in numbers (preliminary analysis): - 46% of reefs experienced record high DHW - new record of 17.7 DHW from the southern GBR - 37% of the GBR has been exposed to three or more >6DHW events in the past decade (1/n)

Incredible use of drone tech to perform before-after bleaching assessments on the GBR by @JezRoff Play with the slider here: https://t.co/UsaSD5Q1f3 Eyrie Reef near Lizard Island, December 2023 vs. March 2024. Mortality above 70%

North to south. It’s a lot of coral to lose.
Record heat and extreme temperature anomalies have led to severe coral bleaching in Woppaburra sea Country. I felt devastated getting in the water. Some mortality (not quantified yet) was also visible. The heat wave is subsiding now - we hope these resilient reefs can recover.

meanwhile in the southern GBR.. mass coral bleaching (& recent mortality) at all reefs & sites surveyed this weekend, affecting vast majority of genera & all size classes; unfortunately, slope (~8m) almost as severely affected (~80% of colonies across sites) as the crest (>90%)!
More underwater images of the mass bleaching unfolding in the northern GBR. Water temperatures appear to be dropping after prolonged heating of >5 DHW, but the coral bleaching at this reef is severe (>80% colonies), with exceptionally high rates of mortality in juvenile corals.

In December 2023, this reef in the northern Great Barrier Reef was 100% coral cover. In March 2024, after ~6 weeks of prolonged heat stress, coral bleaching was extensive and mortality underway, with 80% bleached and 20% recently dead colonies.

🚨🐠 Urgent Alert: Coral Bleaching in South Huvadhu Atoll, Maldives 🐠🚨 We've observed concerning signs of localized coral bleaching in South Huvadhu Atoll, Maldives, coinciding with NOAA Coral Watch alerts.

Mass mortality currently unfolding in the northern Great Barrier Reef. This isn’t an isolated site: an entire 8km long fore-reef flank that three months ago was >80% coral cover. After 6 DHW >90% of these colonies are either bleached or dead.
