Mass mortality currently unfolding in the northern Great Barrier Reef. This isn’t an isolated site: an entire 8km long fore-reef flank that three months ago was >80% coral cover. After 6 DHW >90% of these colonies are either bleached or dead.

Butterfly fish ARE #mesopredators after all
@AMAZlNGNATURE Sharks are often found completely chomped in half. This one was mysteriously found with 3/4 of its body completely gone. It could've been caused by a bigger Great White or by a ferocious Orca.

It’s the biggest story at the moment but will the collapse of ecosystems be televised? Well you saw it here first & it’s coming to all of us. I’ll post again later. But for the meantime… Please…. Watch the Trees. #tasmania

Mortally wounded. Thousands of trees once seemingly healthy just months ago are now in their death throes. I can’t believe what’s happening. #tasmania

@Cghlewis Yeah, and so are the type conversion versions of the map functions to my chagrin. I'm sure @hadleywickham is sick of hearing us whine about it, but I feel like the kids in season 4 of the wire when Mr Prezbo is changing up his classroom management strategy every week.

“Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted or do I jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted?” Yes
Trump: So I said, let me ask you a question and he said, nobody ever asked this question and it must be because of MIT, my relationship to MIT. Very smart. He goes, I say, what would happen if the boat sank from its weight? And you're in the boat and you have this tremendously

I read this wrong! It’s the “6816th best ecologist” presumably because “the biggest D award” didn’t have the same ring to it
Being ranked the “6816th place Ecologist in the world” is a dream I never knew I had, thanks so much https://t.co/65KRY6lPg3

The black line on top is the 2024 sea sfc temp in mid FL Keys reef. The solid horizontal purple line is the bleaching threshold. We’ve already reached it, ~1 month ahead of 2023 - the worst mass bleaching event ever. To bleach, it would need to be sustained, but not a good sign
Heres a graph from @catinsight (he’s a great follow folks). It shows just how much hotter it is now than even last year at this time. Black line is 2024. @CoralReefWatch already has a bleaching warning for the Keys and it’s only June 1.
