It was such an honour and huge responsibility to paint this portrait of Helen McCrory for this evening's episode of Peaky Blinders. I hope I did her justice.

Ray on the Red Chair. Oil on fine canvas. 60 X 75cm My painting of the actor and director @RayPanthaki I enjoyed playing with the orange/blue colour palette on this one. A couple of the paintings I did over winter had this combination of colours and I loved the warmth of it.

David Gauld's portrait (c1920) is an exercise in aesthetic values; it is reputed to depict the actress Irene Vanburgh, Oscar Wilde's own choice for Gwendolen in the first performance of 'The Importance of Being Ernest,' which opened at St. James's Theatre, 14th February 1895.

Arnold Mason earned his living mostly by painting portraits, much in the style of Augustus John, with whom he shared a studio. He was engaged to fellow Slade artist Winifred Knights and produced a number of portraits of her such as this one from around 1918.

The early Italian Renaissance painters, together with the Pre-Raphaelites shaped Victor Hume Moody's work which can be stylish and beautifully observed with a thoughtful narrative. He deserves a wider and more appreciative public. This self-portrait dates from around 1935.

William Orpen's portrait (1900) is of the painter John Everett (a distant cousin) pictured in the London studio they shared; Orpen left the Slade in 1899 and every new picture was a launchpad for new ideas, he already had a growing reputation for technique and daring.
