Today we have published our latest work in @NatureGeosci Slush accounts for more than half on Antarctica’s surface meltwater area at the peak of the melt season! The paper is freely available here: https://t.co/z1M9euVCNr @IanWillis16 @AliBanwell @SdeRodaHusman 1/5

New paper alert!🪇 Led by the very fab @rebeccadell1 in @NatureGeosci, we highlight the critical importance of considering slush when studying surface melt in Antarctica. Read more in Becky's thread below! 🧵

Further, we have found that the albedo impact of slush and ponded water is not accounted for in RACMO2.3p2, and that melt because of this is being underestimated by 2.8x! 4/5

Slush is particularly important as it often acts as a precursor to the formation of meltwater lakes, which are cable of driving hydrofracture, and in extreme cases, ice-shelf collapse! 3/5

We used machine learning to map both slush and ponded water across 67 Antarctic ice shelves between 2013 and 2021! Surface meltwater typically forms in the austral summer in Antarctica and is most common towards ice shelf grounding lines. 2/5

Interested in the drivers of the recently observed seasonal land-ice-flow in Antarctica? Our new @JGREarthSurface paper reveals summertime speed-up in the Antarctic Peninsula can be attributed to both surface and oceanic forcing. Read for free here: https://t.co/jbFRjHJA8c

Ice shelves don’t just buckle under the weight of meltwater lakes—they fracture, according to new work led by CIRES' @AliBanwell. As the climate warms and melt rates in Antarctica increase, this fracturing could cause vulnerable ice shelves to collapse. https://t.co/RYiGh0Yk1H

Landmark new study finds that climate change will cause $38 TRILLION of destruction EACH YEAR by 2050, causing average incomes to shrink by 19% within the next 26 years! This damage will be 6x higher than the cost of limiting global warming to 2 °C https://t.co/InnI26NXzB
