If you own your own home, get solar panels. Get a 10 year loan, at a green interest rate. You will, at worst, break even over the 10 years, probably save money. And after the loan is paid off, you have basically free electricity for another 20 years.

@ray_cun Can I again ask about the cost of installing a system that gives that level of return???...

@KitMurray I don't know what Niall's cost. Our system cost 7000 for 8 panels, 4 in front, 4 in back. It was installed in November, too soon to estimate the annual return.

@ray_cun My panels will be paid back in less than 4 years under our system here and at current electricity prices. I very much doubt they will last more than 15 though. While it’s great for me personally, they’ve produced almost nothing the past two months, when the grid needed it most.

@curates_egg They're only part of the solution, that's true. Why do you say they will only last 15 years? Ours are guaranteed to 25.

@ray_cun Do the panels have a useful life of 30 years? Massively doubt that and a very misleading post!

@ConorG86 Our panels have a 25 year warranty. They don't stop working at that point, but efficiency drops below 80%.

@ray_cun Why doesn't the State invest in this then instead of ordinary working people who have been crushed by a cost of living crisis and housing crisis? We should be moving to Green energy as fast as possible. It shouldn't be left to a personal investment choice.

@SocialistDenman The state is driving a big shift to renewable electricity at a national level, installing solar and schools around the country, and helping homeowners and farmers move to renewable energy themselves.

@ray_cun @rayofoghlu Do you have a heat pump installed too? I hear solar panels are more effective in saving money if you have a heat pump installed not sure if this is true

@JonathanFearon1 @rayofoghlu We don't, budget didn't go that far. The work we have done has brought us to a B1 rating, I'd like to get a heat pump next. Probably a few years before I can start that conversation though!

@ray_cun You need to home to use the energy though or batteries are very expensive. I’d love to add them but the cost and payback is just too much at present. A government backed 0% loan would be a huge incentive.

@saloreilly You can also sell power to the grid and get the feed-in tariff. Not as good as using the power yourself, but still good payback.

@ray_cun In New Jersey and New York it's a much better return, due to the government incentives available.

@ray_cun I installed panels on the cheap(ish) as I was putting up a roof on a garage, and the bit that the panels covered didn't need slates, saving me about 1000 of the 7000 I spent. The payback was supposed to be 7 to 8 years, but with electricity prices gone so high, it's below 4 years

@ray_cun Won't give that sort of return for the majority of homeowners in semi detached homes with little roof space
