Despite her short life, Deborah Rabinowitz's research on the seven forms of rarity transformed ecology and continues to inspire and guide biodiversity protection. Her legacy will never be forgotten!

Deborah Rabinowitz's pioneering research reshaped our understanding of plant ecology and biodiversity. Her framework on species rarity is a cornerstone in conservation biology.

A significant part of my PhD was based on a woman's work and I feel the need to share about this incredible scientist: Deborah Rabinowitz (1947-1987), who was a professor in the Section of Ecology and Systematics at @Cornell University. #WomeninScience

By building a model that combines the 3 rarity traits with other vulnerability drivers, we created a vulnerability index. Globally projecting the species' index values and land cover changes, we identified conflict areas with high potential vulnerability and future habitat loss.

Classifying terrestrial mammal species by rarity shows that many IUCN 'least concern' species have high rarity, indicating a need for monitoring. Data-deficient species also show patterns similar to high-risk categories, highlighting an urgent need for focused attention.

Rarer species are often more at risk of extinction. In 1979, Dr. Deborah Rabinowitz proposed a classification of rarity based on species' habitat number, population size, and distribution area. We applied Rabinowitz's approach to 4,472 terrestrial mammals!

In a time when we're focused on saving as many species as possible from extinction, having effective strategies to identify species' vulnerabilities is a great way to allocate our limited conservation resources.

Sympatry with closely related species constrains speciation... or does it? @marciopie @raqueldivieso & @fercaron report that, for terrestrial vertebrates, probability of speciation is unaffected by number of other species already present in a lineage https://t.co/p1O6pgFLpW

Scientists have calculated how many ants are on Earth. The number is so big, it’s “unimaginable.”

The staggering new estimate from scientists brings into relief ants’ astonishing ubiquity at a time of growing concern about insects dying off.

Today we have one more loss for Brazilian research: the Biology Institute #UNESPRioClaro. We can't just stand here and watch while our historical and scientific background burns to ashes. This has to be a priority for the next government, since we already lost hope in this one.

Curious fact: in the first known map in which the word "America" is used (the Waldseemüller map, from 1507), the word is actually placed on Brazil.
