Today I was laid off from a job I really loved at Vox while on maternity leave 🙃
They let go of a lot of amazing writers.
I'm gonna take a beat to hang with my baby, but keep me in your thoughts for tech/data journalism jobs next year.
Starbucks union says that only *3* of the 220 Starbucks stores that have voted to unionize have had their first bargaining sessions "due to Starbucks’ union-busting and delay tacts."

@SBWorkersUnited
I’d argue the most effective politicians on Twitter are
@realDonaldTrump
and
@Ocasio2018
for completely different reasons. Trump uses dog whistles and obfuscation while Ocasio-Cortez gives a clear and clear-headed look at what’s happening day to day in our government. Both work.
“What makes this so frustrating is that my wife will send me a photo of her and my 10-month-old son going out for a walk. If I had a break at home, I’d go on a walk with them.” — Wells Fargo financial services employee in Iowa
“If employees refuse to come in, it means the system isn’t working” —
@I_Am_NickBloom
I talked to a bunch of people who've had to return to the office about what it's been like — and how it could be better. 🧵
The Fake News Washington Post, Amazon’s “chief lobbyist,” has another (of many) phony headlines, “Trump Defiant As China Adds Trade Penalties.” WRONG! Should read, “Trump Defiant as U.S. Adds Trade Penalties, Will End Barriers And Massive I.P. Theft.” Typically bad reporting!
Updated with new numbers. The US now has approximately 3,500 confirmed coronavirus cases — and a trajectory that's marching in lockstep with Italy
@dylanlscott
I'll probably update/edit/replace but here it is, folks: the Diversity Pandering BINGO Board. Thanks to everyone who made these excellent suggestions. Edits welcome!
“I see ads for these teamwork apps — pictures of people sitting at a conference table and they have all sorts of things on the wall & they’re really collaborating. And I’m like, that’s not what we’re doing.” — Melissa, a government policy analyst in DC
Three sentences into WeWork's "our story" section of its IPO filings and I have no idea what it does: "Our mission is to elevate the world’s consciousness"
Signal became one of the top 10 most downloaded social apps on iOS yesterday for the first time, according to data from App Annie.
The last time Signal downloads ranked nearly as high was on the day of Trump’s inauguration.
Crime is going down but we’re worrying about it more. How fear-based social media like Nextdoor, Citizen, and now Amazon’s Neighbors are making us afraid.
Communication seems like a good thing until you have too much of it. It’s so easy to communicate with job software like Slack, Teams and Google Hangouts and Meet that we’re posting more messages than any one person can read.
So far
@SBWorkersUnited
has filed 125 unfair labor practice cases against
@Starbucks
. Following investigations, the National Labor Relations Board has issued *complaints* in 45 of those cases.
“People have adapted to remote work, and truthfully, the firm has done a tremendous job at adapting in the pandemic. But I think it’s more the returning to work that they’re struggling on.” — Andres, Boston law firm
Slack says 76% of knowledge workers want flexibility in where they work. Executives are nearly 3x more likely than non-executive employees to want to return to the office full-time. Woof.
@WSJ
Equivalent of Trump’s signature: promising $50K but then only ponying up “a blue Walmart bag containing between $12,000 and $13,000 in cash and, randomly, a boxing glove that Mr. Cohen said had been worn by a Brazilian mixed-martial arts fighter”
On Friday the Starbucks union had its biggest win yet: Its flagship NYC roastery voted to unionize. Here's a 🧵 from my piece on why the
@SBWorkersUnited
has been so successful and what union movement could learn from it:
The hypocrisy is making workers angry and they're fighting back in the few ways they can: not showing up to the office or looking for work someplace else.
The NLRB found that the Starbucks union *did not* threaten and coerce employees. On the other hand, the NLRB has issued 16 official complaints against Starbucks that include 70 charges and over 500 allegations of misconduct
The NLRB dismissed Starbucks’ FALSE charges against union leaders in Phoenix, AZ. Starbucks claimed that union reps physically intimidated and berated customers & fellow workers. The NLRB investigated these charges and found no evidence to support Starbucks claims.
@casualafro
I lol’d twice:
“She just got sick of us calling her out for sounding kind of racist, so she started with this ‘moderate’ shit.”
And
“Like, just call yourself a Libertarian. It’s the same thing,” Reed added.
A lot has happened since I last made this chart. Disney bought 21st Century Fox, Apple came out with a new TV strategy and Oath lost its stupid name. Who owns everything in Big Media today: via

Alphabet was a giant conspiracy to waste reporters’ time by forcing them to explain wtf it was every time before just saying Google for the rest of the piece anyway
