The M4 is only a marginal difference in performance from the M3 so unless you want the new screen tech or slightly better battery life M3 is your best bet ...or even getting an older series might get the job done too. M1 was the peak, rest are just money making schemes.

If anyone is in the market for a new MacBook Pro ... Just use my situation as a decision maker. I had the Macbook M1 Pro Max since it's release, sold it after 3 years and got the M3 Max Pro and other than it feeling like a new laptop physically... I feel 0 difference overall.
