many people think ocs and characters are narratively the same and that is the problem with a lot of indie and adjacent spaces. artists just do not treat their ocs with the same care as a tactfully designed character with actual meaning and that's why your oc webcomic will fail

RESEARCH. Do your research please- try to learn different tropes, designs, quirks, history, etc. to add more depth to your OC's. I know it's time consuming but trust me, doing all of that is worth it cuz it will also help you gain a lot of knowledge in the process.

adding onto this, i rarely see people acknowledge that OCs and self-crafted stories are an incredibly useful tool to analyze and reflect on one's own subconscious attitudes and beliefs
I think it’s important to look at your roster of OCs and consider any reoccurring patters sometimes because I feel like a lot of people fall into weird tropes without realizing it, like making all their muscular / masculine characters have darker skin tones than skinnier ones or-

Yes. Fandom WAS toxic pre 2020. I was there. Gamer Gate, ship wars, gatekeeping, squabbling and a LOT of mess and noise. Post-COVID, it IS different. Because before, it was infighting. Now, it’s people looking down at even common fandom activities as aberrant behavior.
