An elite figure skater, a war reporter w PTSD, a weird myth about selkies, various lapses in journalistic ethics, and that one hockey bro who's your new best friend... INK AND ICE won some awards and maybe you'll dig it.
It’s World AIDS Day.
So let’s remember what George H.W. Bush did about that:
- banned HIV+ people from entering the U.S.
- reduced research funding
- favored abstinence education over actual sex ed including safer sex practices
- over a 100,000 died of AIDS on his watch
Cis people: I need you to understand (and help others understand) that “the trans debate” is NOT relevant “to only a small number of people” but to everyone. Thread below for why:
(This is focused on cis women, but cis dudes I need you to listen too. You are also in danger.)
Miss me with your pearl clutching.
The reason HIV/AIDS is a treatable chronic disease, the reason undetectable=untransmitable, the reason PrEP prevents people getting HIV is because, among other things, people dying of government neglect yelled at politicians in restaurants.
No one survived the AIDS crisis by asking nicely.
You’re ignorant of history if you waste a syllable complaining about people yelling at government officials in restaurants.
To survive, become unbearable. Haunt them like the already dead.
And yeah, vote.
@johnroderick
Things you taught your kid:
- food must be earned
- disordered eating in the forms of food hoarding and punishing herself by not eating
- asking for help is futile
I’m not done yet....
@johnroderick
- that you think women should be punished when they don’t have mechanical intelligence because they’ve never been shown how mechanical things work
- to receive love she must have the physical, intellectual and emotional strength of an adult while a child
.... still not done yet
The thing where the girl child cannot be seen to be taller than the boy children on the royal Christmas card so they stuck her in a chair to conceal her height has me so randomly mad.
Being anti-trans is only possible by policing the gender and sex of everyone. Because I promise you - you don’t know who is trans and who isn’t.
Also, most of this isn’t really about trans people although we get hurt the most first - it’s about control.
Hey, just a reminder that Marianne Williamson is antivax, anti fat, and anti science. Also anyone who tells you they’re the only one who loves you enough to save you from your failings is extremely dangerous. Just please please stop elevating this woman.
I mean we’ve got multiple state governments super hyped to give kids internal and external genital exams because there might be one trans girl in Ohio playing softball. What’s the purpose of that beyond telling girls their bodies belong to the state?
Anti-trans policies require guesswork and punish people - regardless of gender and sex - for not conforming to extremely stereotypical (and white) assumptions about what men and women look like, act like, and dress like.
Here are just some of the types of cis women who have faced harassment, violence, and legal repercussions for using a women’s bathroom:
- women with short hair
- women with alopecia
- women who are athletes
- women who have had mastectomies
- women who are tall
(Continued)
When trans people lose rights everyone becomes open to scrutiny by the gender police. Anyone empowered to police gender is not trying to protect anyone - they’re like a teacher that hates you and loves their red pen.
@johnroderick
- that she must be cheerful or face longer punishment
- that you don’t care about her feelings
- inefficient use of time
Guess what? Still not done!
Can't believe people think Romeo and Juliet is supposed to be about noble true love and serious, stately tragedy and not a tabloid disaster tale about annoying teen celebutantes with low impulse control. Like, sorry, Baz Luhrmann got that exactly right.
- women who are balding
- women who have facial hair and choose not to remove it for a range of reasons including religious ones.
- women who like pants and button downs.
- women who like hyper-feminine theatrical vintage styles
- women with pronounced facial features
@johnroderick
- that you care more about how the can opener works than how she works
- that love relationships require her to perform like a trick pony (enjoy the disastrous friendships and romantic relationships she’ll seek out if you do this on the regular)
- terrible study habits
Cis men also face harassment in their gendered spaces if they are slight, short, have long hair, don’t obviously grow facial hair even when clean shaven, prefer not to use a urinal, are disinterested in bonding rituals centered around misogyny and violence, and more
@johnroderick
This is gonna be a story she tells at parties because "sometimes my childhood was wacky and difficult" and conversation is going to screech to a halt because other people are gonna be like "that's not actually a funny story & it's a wonder you're not more messed up than you are."
You like wearing pants? You like your kickboxing class? Big fan of wearing your hair short? Super into making your own decisions about when, if ever, to have kids? Enjoy sitting in anyway other than legs crossed at the ankle? Congrats, cis women, trans rights are about you.
For cis women, trans rights are about whether you’re good enough at being a woman and good enough at being confined to the white Christian nationalist version of womanhood to be safe.
You probably aren’t. And no amount of punishing trans people will change that.
Anyway, the more people anti-trans people can find and penalize for being gender suspicious, the happier they are. It’s a form of fascism that isn’t even about trans people. It’s about your freedom in your clothes, hobbies, jobs, and relationships.
The anti-trans panic part of a broader fascist agenda focused on taking away everyone’s choices in public and in private.
Abandoning trans people to persecution and death is immoral.
It also opens the doors of your community and your home and your heart to fascism.
@johnroderick
20 minutes of her puzzling alone with you asking if she wants hints, then you praising the parts she got right and showing her, and having her do it herself next time would have been entirely fine, supportive, and educational. Not this mess.
Also are you bleating about liking this thread but cursing me for “academic” language like “cis”?
Then USE YOUR OWN WORDS TO CONVEY THESE POINTS IN A WAY PEOPLE YOU KNOW WILL BE RECEPTIVE TO.
Come on!
@abbyvesoulis
The “can’t be real” crowd needs to acknowledge how lucky they are that none of their friends married some totally yikesadoodle wacko. You see one super bizarre controlling weirdo and then you too, like Fox Mulder, will believe.
And if you don’t stick up for your trans siblings, you’re at risk of having to say goodbye to everything you love about how you live as the gender you’ve always been.
Simple self-interest really does require cis people to support trans rights, even if it makes you uncomfortable, and even if you don’t know any trans people.
If you don’t care about us, at least save yourselves.
And maybe get busy explaining that to the cis folks around you
@hunt4change
Should sex work be decriminalized? Yes. Should sex workers have to see clients they don't want for the good of society? Hell no. The customer is not always right. Destigmatizing sex means destigmatizing both having sex & not having it. No one has the right to someone else's body
Also cis people? Wanna be useful? Write a letter to the editor every time a newspaper advocates that a party abandon trans rights because it’s not relevant to enough people to matter in our politics.
@LauraPowellEsq
AIDS. Suicide. Homophobic and transphobic violence. And bullying from the church, from the government, and from folks like you who could instead ask any queer person my age (50) where our peers are in order to actually understand the data you’re sloppily waving about.
A lot of women receive messages that other women are the enemy and are hard to be friends with. This is a lie designed to prevent what is happening right now, which is that when we compare notes and support each other we destroy our enemies with extreme efficiency.
@hunt4change
Anyway this thread is TERRIBLE. The framing of "men need sex or society will crumble" merely serves to replicate the false idea that men are necessarily violent in pursuit of sex while also replicating the idea that no one but men likes sex.
@JoyceCarolOates
“I had to call my doctor about my chronic inability to understand that the singular they has been in use in English since the 1300s.”
“Oh, what did they say?”
I just saw a dude jump up in the air to avoid a Brooklyn rat running right at him and the rat would not be avoided and jumped up to meet him. Like the rat’s entire mission was -touching you-.
I want everyone to look at the resurgence of far-right, extensively disproven “queers are a danger to kids” rhetoric and compare that language to a lot of the flack queer people over 30 have received for being on social media & in other online spaces for the last five or so years
@emeriticus
GenX here.
Military recruiting in schools - political. Our desperation for AIDS education, which the state said we were too young for - political. All the censorship drama (especially about music then) - political. Um, remember when Rock the Vote was started? POLITICAL.
Have you ever been a woman in the workplace and had this experience:
Dudes: "Let's do this cool thing!"
Woman: "Let's make a plan."
Dudes: "Cool thing! Cool thing!"
Woman: "I like your goals. Here are the logistics we need to solve to make it so."
Dudes: "You're so negative."
The other thing I will say about Twitter’s potential sale and what that may or may not do to the platform:
On the internet your home will always leave you.
@libbyemmons
Vaccination was required for me to attend primary school, secondary school, and university. It was also required for trips to several countries. Requiring vaccination/inoculation for societal participation is at minimum centuries old - including amongst George Washington’s troops
It’s not just that I grew up on Stan Lee’s work; it’s that my dad did too, going to Catoonists & Illustrators School (now SVA) on the GI Bill because of his love of comics. Knowing my dad, he’s probably already inappropriately hustling Lee for a job and talking Spider-Man. RIP.
Queer Nation was founded in 1990 by activists from ACT-UP. Many of the people who call themselves queer are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. It is ahistorical to say that older people in general and gay men who survived AIDS in particular hate in-community usage of “queer”
@Cthulhucachoo
Not remotely the asshole. Partnerships don't have to involve romance or sex. Y'all on the same page and honoring your commitments. People who don't respect that -- fling into sun.
I think we need to stop saying “thank god they weren’t smart/organized enough to succeed” because, frankly, they totally were. Panic buttons ripped out? Advance tours to see layout? Zip ties and bombs?
I want to talk about Lambda Literary pulling a nomination because someone was aggressively transphobic on Twitter, and about how this isn't the organization policing manners or quelling speech or deciding only some queers are the right queers or WHATEVER.
Okay, so as promised commentary on the BTS little film with the Martha Graham quote. These are just all my feelings as someone who did Graham Dance seriously starting at a young age. I'm only speaking for myself and how I experienced that training.
@akatepockett
And this is absolutely real because I know more than one woman whose partner is mad she’s an author and is low-key belligerent about it, and I have dated folks who insisted on being referred to as authors when there was no draft, no process, no nothing just a feeeeeeeling.
You know how tired you are? They need to be that tired. You know how it’s hard to think and work because of the stress? They need to be that stressed. The point of protests and, yes, incivility is not cruelty; it’s to wear down and slow an abusive, corrupt agenda.
@TwitterDev
People using this site for free, tweeting their content through the day, are why people are here. No one wants to pay for a site that has open contempt for its users and doesn’t understand its own value proposition.
@libbyemmons
Just like your first amendment rights do not encompass the right to baselessly shout fire in a crowded theater, your individual freedoms do not encompass the right to harm others at random - that includes by spreading dangerous diseases that kill people and economies.
@emeriticus
That kids are aware of how politics work and are aware of their rights and how to fight for them is a net good. That’s how you get a functioning society.
That kids are aware of this in part because of how much we’ve let them down is tragic.
@JoyceCarolOates
Also while we’re here, when someone (a real person or a fictional character) uses they/them pronouns, those pronouns are specific and communicative. To use some other pronoun, which they have made clear is inaccurate, is that which obfuscates
DeSantis is NOT a centrist.
DeSantis wants to ban almost all abortion. He opposes Covid vaccination for kids. He signed a "Don't Say Gay" law and banned all gender-affirming care for trans youth. These policies cost lives and are NOT centrist positions.
Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk said he would back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) if he runs for president in 2024. Tweeting into the night on Friday, Musk described DeSantis as a “sensible and centrist” choice.
@ask_aubry
I am 3000% sure that if she did do anything for herself (e.g., a hobby, friends, a class, a side-hustle, whatever) this dude would hate that thing, say it was boring/childish, be jealous of any success she had at it, insist the people involved were a bad influence, etc
Elizabeth Wurtzel was a major factor in making personal essay the currency of women writers in the 90s. This was a blessing and a curse, both for her and for the rest of us. We all deserved better and to be better, and I'm sad she's gone.
Hi, New Yorkers are just as American as anyone else. I’m so sick of this nonsense. Geography doesn’t confer virtue. The “American Heartland” is all of us. My vote and my existence shouldn’t count less. And yet here we are.
So let me get this right - a legislator with a trans kid is being investigated for “conflict of interest” but it’s totally fine if people who own houses vote on laws about that and people with kids in public schools vote on laws about that.
Today I was informed that because of a complaint filed by David Begley, I am under official investigation for a conflict of interest for standing for trans rights.
My colleagues stood up offering support, but I don't need their words. I need their vote.
Lambda Literary has effectively made a strong statement that trans-hostile and trans-exclusionary rhetoric won't be tolerated by their org - even from other queer people. That's a good thing.
And if you don’t like the word queer for you, that’s your prerogative but for many of us it is a word that is political, activist, and academic that we fought for with our bodies. And I’m not letting a bunch of anti-trans hate mongers take it from me or from our community.
You know this random we’re mocking for saying there weren’t female novelists pre-JKR? I’ve never so wanted a wild Anne Rice to pop up from whatever astral visitation she’s having w Lestat to inform someone that they are, in fact, interrogating the text from the wrong perspective.
@AITA_reddit
The part I’m stuck on (I’m stuck on a lot of parts) is where people view the apology dinner as “their special day.”
My special day is any day people control their nonsense enough that I don’t need an apology dinner thrown for me.
If this is the beginning of Twitter’s demise (it may or may not be) we’ll just do what we’ve always done - grouse about inadequate replacements and fractured community until we find the next thing that will also only be viable for 5-15 years.
@JenniferMarguli
1. Your math is wrong.
2. As many of 1/3 of people who get COVID have long-term disability from it.
3. Thanksgiving is expendable, grandparents aren't.
4. You can't tell who is and isn't healthy by looking at them.
5. Precautions don't add to fear, they reduce it.
I am 50-years-old and learned queer as a uniting, positive, powerful word for us from my elders in the ‘80s and ‘90s. This was not an isolated thing. And I really need people to stop lying about that.
One of the very defining things about me is that Instudied at the Martha Graham School for Contemporary Dance from the earliest age they accepted children (11). Guess I have to check out this BTS phenomenon now or something.
Folks. I am not saying you have to check the race, gender, and sexuality of every author you read and enter it in a spreadsheet. I am merely saying that the context from which authors write can be interesting. And, that there's an issue here specific to Romancelandia....
The right is actively putting queer people back into the sort of ubiquitous danger we faced decades ago. They are making it terrifying for allies to support us. And they are incentivizing younger queer people to be unwitting collaborators against their own communities and rights.
Because the language (including calling adults who exist in cross-generational spaces with other adults “groomers”) is horrifically similar.
Parts of the queer community have been actively primed for some time now - based on nothing - to turn against their own.
@RickSteves
Due to an airport employee strike preventing the plane getting to the gate, I once got stuck for four hours on the tarmac in Berlin with a gay soccer team from a hobby league. Cabin crew gave out chocolates and we had a dance party. Unions are good. Americans should strike more.
While the Lammys mostly honor texts not authors, it is profoundly reasonable for an organization to want to avoid increasing the platform of someone who is engaged in active harm to parts of the community it nurtures and advocates for.
It’s part of the inevitable Internet lifecycle. Social platforms die or atrophy or are abandoned because of scaling, profitability, technology and/or ownership issues, as well as cultural value shifts All The Time.
Yeah, I just had this reaction too as I hadn’t realized that’s what was going on. This makes everything worse, and Lambda Literary is still in the right.
So how the Lammies work:
@BetteMidler
This is disappointing. Women are people. It’s important in the current battle for abortion rights and bodily autonomy to clearly address the sexism women face, remind everyone that women are people, and support our trans siblings, many of whom can get pregnant but are not women.
We know this because of the injection (by anti-trans people who don’t like words that can be used to obscure gender) of opposition to “queer” by young LGBTQ+ people in spaces where the word was never actively a slur.
It’s not just about abortion. It’s about treating everyone with a uterus between the ages of 12 and 50 (or thereabouts) as potentially criminally pregnant.
LiveJournal and Tumblr are the two examples of this you’re most likely to know (notably: in both cases precipitated by bans on explicit content for deeply different reasons that disproportionately targeted queer people and content).
@hunt4change
This regressive trashfire is also a heaping mess of binary nonsense, which isn't doing trans folks any favors either. Basically, everyone is harmed by this thread. Everyone. No winners. Just horrifying.
When you see mainstream media amplifying arguments that queer is a bad word, you are witnessing pushback against the idea that we have culture and history and a right to transmit that culture and history both to others like us and to anyone interested in our wider impact.
There are so many ways in which younger people are more inclusive, more thoughtful, and linguistically different than their elders. But when something smells like the result of trolls, disinformation, and psyops we have to speak out
Elevating anti-trans rhetoric is in opposition to Lambda Literary's mission. Increasing the already massive platform of someone who is engaged in anti-trans rhetoric and harassment of trans people on social media is in opposition to Lambda Literary's mission.
I am currently casting a voice actor who:
- identifies as non-binary
- has an excellent RP
- can sound 16-20
- has a demo to send my producer
This is for PAID work w possible expansion beyond the immediate project.
