Mostly just motivation and money The will to want to be at the top level has to completely outweigh the potential negative impacts of spending the money to get to the 4-5 majors you need to get to be ranked Remove the money and motivation is much easier to find
Melee players who have been playing for a long time but have never been ranked: When is it time to say "Damn I feel like there's no way I can get any better?" Or, alternatively, how do you keep finding ways to get better? Some of y'all are not human with your improvement rates.
