Given the public statements made by ACL regarding other recent events, the ACL Leadership's silence on October 7th was deafening and tweets like this one underscore why the authors felt a need to provide the context for their submissions.

Furthermore the response is being shared intentionally truncated to remove the critical context and most of the negative responses are written by those who haven't even bothered to read the section.

What a disingenuous response. Keep in mind these were written right after October 7th which fell right before the camera ready deadline. The events directly impacted the authors who were refused recognition by the ACL leadership for their trauma. despite decades of contributions.
Future rebuttals be like: . Reviewer 2: "Here is the counter-example to the claimed theorem". Authors: "Reviewer 2 is Hamas and antisemitic". I don't know about others, but we Indians are used to being called out anti-nationalists for every random thing in the past decade.

If this is the way an @aclmeeting member responds to the murder of my family on October 7th by erasing 3,000 years of Jewish history I think this underscores the need for moral clarity and such an ethics statement!.

Being anti-Zionist is not inherently antisemitic. However, anti-Zionism can frequently devolve into antisemitism by zealous, emotional, ignorant & radical activists. Dialogue/engagement between the pro-Palestine & pro-Israel camps should constructively identify those boundaries.

It is very much ethical to recognize the failure of @aclanthology leadership to provide moral clarity by recognizing the traumatic impact of October 7th on its Israeli membership. Especially given the public statements it’s made regarding similar recent events.

Recognizing the murder of my family by Hamas on October 7th is neither of these things. This is shameful rhetoric for a senior “ethics” researcher from @mozilla.
