it just occurred to me that Kathryn Hahn will be playing Mother Gothel in the Tangled remake, having already played Doctor Octopus in Spider-Verse, whose wife in Spider-Man 2 was played by Donna Murphy, Mother Gothel in the original Tangled. What the fuck?

The initial worldbuilding in Harry Potter works the way it does because it relies on a certain hyperbolic whimsical absurdity, all of which falls apart the moment the plot turns into serious business. Possibly the reason why the magic seems to dissipate post-GoF.
One of the funniest things about Harry Potter worldbuilding is that there's no maths class at Hogwarts, so everyone in the wizarding world presumably has, at best, a Year 7's understanding of maths.
