A massive congratulations to @CDT_ReNU student @CaiGafoddYBai who wrote the models, API calls, made them all work together and distilled the data into what you see in the paper. The work wouldn't have happened without his skill and perseverance! (10/n)

But. this doesn't just work for dye-cells, #Organic and #Perovskite PV can join the party too - we even model some literature data showing they can have similar benefits over silicon. (9/n).

The ever-helpful @kettle_jeff provided data for large-area dye-cell devices on which we based our calculations, while dye-cell superstar @freitag_marina & team showed that device design can dictate how efficiency varies with irradiance, which is key to the benefits we see. (8/n)

AND, because we're producing more energy when it's valuable, these devices also are predicted to make more money than Silicon PV. (7/n)

We simulate the effect of adding these devices on the UK energy network (tip of the hat to our solar engineer guru @myGridGB) and predict CO2 savings that are much bigger than Silicon PV because less coal/gas is burnt (6/n)

In our paper we suggest a new approach, where Solar PV is designed to be more efficient in lower light conditions. Energy production still peaks at midday, but you get more energy when you need it (5/n)

Unfortunately conventional PV production peaks at midday, when peak demand is usually early afternoon. What can be done until utility scale batteries come along? (4/n)

This is a problem for conventional PV since it means it will need to get cheaper more quickly to stay competitive, unless we do something different. (3/n).

Not all renewable energy is equally valuable. If lots is produced at the same time, it isn't as effective at displacing fossil fuels and doesn't make as much money. Negative energy prices are becoming more common in places with high PV (2/n).

I was very sorry to hear that @mcleish_t had passed away. He was reliably warm, sharp, generous of his time and experience, and a champion of interdisciplinary research. I learned a lot from him when he was at Durham and he will be missed.

New paper! Good work from all including @DocampoGroup and others. Always fun to do some Kinetic Monte Carlo, and yet another paper that grew from @NECEM_NE.
