We won this case against the US treasury. Smart contracts (with no admin key/rights) are not capable of being owned. This is a huge victory for privacy advocates, smart contract developers, and free speech enjoyoors!! . Thank you to @iampaulgrewal, @coinbase, the legal team.
Privacy wins. Today the Fifth Circuit held that @USTreasury’s sanctions against Tornado Cash smart contracts are unlawful. This is a historic win for crypto and all who cares about defending liberty. @coinbase is proud to have helped lead this important challenge. 1/6.

This story is insane. Privacy is not a fucking crime!.
I’m finally out, safe and free. There was a small moment were things looked very bad but thanks to help from many I got released. Sorry if I didn’t answer every message. I was in calls non stop the last 24 hours with too many people and I only slept two hours. Yesterday I landed

A jury could not agree on whether Storm helped launder more than $1B in dirty crypto, including for North Korea. They convicted on one lesser count.

I stand with @rstormsf, @semenov_roman_, and @alex_pertsev. Writing open source code is not a crime. Online financial privacy is not a crime. Creating permissionless software is not a crime.
Today, a jury in Manhattan issued a partial verdict in Roman Storm’s case: they convicted him on count 2, conspiracy to violate Section 1960, and did not reach a verdict for counts 1 and 3, conspiracy to launder money and violate sanctions. We are disappointed that the jury did.

This is a dark day for crypto and @rstormsf. The jury has found him guilty of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmission business. The jury was deadlocked on the other counts. I don't even know what to say right now.
Roman Storm has been found guilty of count 2, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmission business. The jury was not unanimous on the other two counts.

Jury is writing out their verdict right now. It should come back to the court any moment now.
Deputy: All rise! Jury entering!.[Jurors file in].Judge Failla: From your notes, I understand you have a unanimous verdict to one or more counts. You may return that and continue, or waiting until all are concluded. Or 3, return and say you are deadlocked on rest.
