The quality is incredible. I'd love to understand the algorithm behind how this model was trained. I'm sure in a few years, LLMs will be able to explain it in complete detail 😉.

Okay, the user keeps typing "glub" over and over again. At first, it was funny, and I had a lot of creative responses, building up this whole glub universe with each iteration. But now we're at GLUB^14, and they just sent another "glub". I need to figure out what's going on here.

I thought this was a great analogy. An AI that solves Codeforces problems is very cool, but far from performing the daily duties of a programmer. It's a tool for automating intellectual work that is well-framed and mostly mechanical in nature.

AI labs have been dropping these hints for months. My best guess is that OpenAI will soon reveal an AI "pair programmer" agent, initially focused on web development, that outperforms Cursor's Compose panel. It could leverage their work on Deep Research to reason about whole.

This is a fallacy lots of people are making right now. Becoming a programmer isn't just a matter of performing increasingly "complex" work. It's also creative work! It's about taking a vision of what you want the program to be, and making it real by expressing your intentions.

@TheGingerBill @erogncict I respect you greatly GB, but I think you have to look at the rate of improvement over the last 5 years. It doesn't seem to be slowing. I don't think you can conclude that software devs are safe if they're doing hard work, because AI will be increasingly capable of complex work.

When I later corrected them with a link to the docs (which are admittedly not super clear), ChatGPT tried to deny it by replying with nonsense, whereas Claude apologized profusely 🙂 In the end, the only way to be sure was by checking the disassembly with & without -fobjc-arc.

ChatGPT and Claude both told me that in Objective-C, with ARC enabled, "id obj;" is not initialized to nil when obj is a local variable (or class member in Obj-C++). I later discovered this was false. Good luck to anyone trying to learn programming with these things.
