Our newest side quest is settling down: The future is unevenly distributed. To be prepared, we have to bring it home. Since 2014, @MaximeStauffer and I have been building here. @jpsnoeij & @chiaragerosa joined in 2015. With @alix_ph we now accelerate.

Here is a pretty wild story of You Can Just Do Things. In 2019, I dreamed about my ideal life. It included:.1. A walkable neighborhood – raising kids near ppl I love.2. A campus – working, learning, and researching alongside ambitious peers. 6 years later. 🧵.

> economic and political incentives to higher fertility are doomed to fail. Children demand sacrifice, of a kind that cannot be repaid with money. It isn’t like a two-year master’s program or a nine-month sabbatical. It is more akin to men offering themselves up for their country.

A dangerous sentiment already shared by the original poaster, Alucin of York. The solution is not to restrict people's ability to voice their thoughts.

Plugging this underrated essay of Duncan's:. > Heaven is a walled garden, and it's meant to be at least in part a wish-fulfillment paradise—thus, the only people you can safely allow inside are those who not only reliably act well, but also robustly desire only virtuous things.

Gemini says 2 things: .1. Landlords aren't required to adhere to any standards, so even in newer constructions they save money using gravity-pressured systems; and.2. Plumbing isn't a regulated profession, so fixes are hacky. Turns out regulation can be good actually :o.

Can somebody explain why UK plumbing is so mediocre?. Doesn't seem to matter whether you pay £ 1000 or 4000/month for a place, it's kind of accepted that your shower is going to have low pressure or randomly changes temperature or leaks?.

Being lovingly demanding is a whole challenge in and of itself of course. Everyone needs to conclude their own goodness and find others who believe in it, before ramping up demandingness. The most effective solution seems to be to commit to a partner with zest for life.

Coincidentally, this also explains why I think organisations should be allowed to fire next day, rather than being the providers of social security. We can have both! There's enough for everyone, we just need to iterate more to find the right fit.

This is why it's good to ramp up demandingness, even unilaterally - stress test whether you can grow or need to find somewhere else to do so:

there is one developmental assignment that comes before all others: you need to navigate to a social context where you are reminded every day that you are good, you are of benefit to others. I cannot stress this highly enough.

Insights like these are so exciting!. You can luckily change your social environment to rate demandingness as fun and good. It initially reduces the friendship pool tremendously but it also helps everyone to level up by getting people either unstuck or part ways.

No one talks about how being avoidant can benefit you in every relationship other than your romantic one. because being easygoing and chill and non reactive and undemanding makes you fun and good to have around, and this is what avoidance (in its most well adjusted form) blesses.

My general sense is that we usually don't invest enough resources to fund sufficient amounts of people to build a good translation chain from A to Z. We underestimate how hard communication is across local realities and could invest much more.

This is a very strong post. I would frame this point as "the world is better understood as boundedly rational agents struggling to bridge inferential gaps across local realities.". Interests can be aligned and comms still fail bc resentments build up & resources are scarce.

My mind is not visual, so graphics rarely feel meaningful. But I have thought of this every day since July 6. It encapsulates spirituality so crisply. And now I found a great plain phrase to explain it, too:. The whole experiences itself through its parts.

To develop lasting communication channels, we need institutional capacity that is trusted by both sides and outlasts political cycles. It cannot be in or run by either the US or China. This is Europe+Switzerland's chance to shine beyond throttling: building a path for joint acc.
