After 4 years of amazing time and experience, my 4 year tenure as a full time open source developer at @open_ml and TUe has ended. It was the perfect first job and I learned a lot. Even ended up teaching and supervising 4 masters students.

We have a lot of problems in academia but it’s the first time I’ve heard people getting bored. Just do something you like, you have all the freedom.
lmao. from a professor. academia is like the worse place to be. no impact and boring AF. bigtech is the place for impact, startup for upside. but academia? maybe for retirement.

Complex software written by mathematicians is impressive and frustrating at the same time, being able to write performant code from scratch based on a paper in a maths journal and casually using Greek symbols in code without any documentation.

Obviously there are multiple ways to still cheat the system like manipulation of input data from the start by a malicious actor. But it can still be a minor improvement and strengthen scientific publication.
