Child No. 82 is a pleasant surprise. Definitely a lot going on and some parts are hit or miss, but I love how they kept it fun even in its most dramatic and political moments through a camp homage to classic Philippine superhero comics and films. JM Ibarra is also very magnetic.

Lav Diaz’s translator being too stunned to speak
Lav Diaz reveals him, Albert Serra and Joaquim Sapinho talked about Gael for the role of Magellan during sex. “From the very beginning, it was really Gael that we chose.” #NYFF63

So, so happy I got to see Open Endings last night! Comedy so good they literally made the audience cackle even with just wordless facial expressions, but also poignant without wallowing in melodrama. A sapphic queer film being this year’s top grossing Cinemalaya film? Dasurv.

I will say the chorus of that Ophelia song has been stuck in my head all weekend so there’s that. Taylor got my ass there.

Final thoughts: Opalite and Ruin the Friendship are great additions to Taylor’s discography, but the album sequence makes the album feel like just a compilation of songs than a proper album. Some production choices undermine songs with good lyrics, while the bad lyrics stick out.

12. The Life of A Showgirl There’s some storytelling here but she has told this cautionary tale on fame in much better ways before. The rhymes sadly don’t sound witty. The celebratory fanfare by the end feels a bit unearned; the production could’ve definitely used more bombast.

11. Honey A little more forgettable for me, especially in its placement as the album’s penultimate track. Also has a chill flow and laid-back vibe like Wi$h Li$t, but the repeated use of “bitch” to refer to other girls in this song also makes it very uncomfortable to listen.

9. Wood Initially liked this because I want to hear Taylor do more groovy dance pop and the first verse really plays well around the concept of luck and superstitions, but the subsequent litany of clunky innuendos feel like attempts at Sabrina’s pen game without the clever wit.

8. Wi$h Li$t The chill flow effectively evokes her daydream of a quiet family life you’d almost overlook her sarcastic playfulness here. Her vocal flourishes are ear candy to me (see: the “you, you, you” in the second chorus), but some of the lyrics disrupt the vibe sometimes.

7. Actually Romantic Hot take: I enjoy this more than I should. The childish barbs and unhinged homoeroticism? The self-aware performative edginess of those pop punk Weezer-esque riffs? It’s ridiculously hilarious that it’s really so brat if you don’t think too much about it.

6. Ruin the Friendship Another gem from the album. Starts out as a wistful prom slow dance country pop which really disarms you for its tragic revelation. The strongest in the album in terms of classic Swiftian storytelling, it’s thematically the emotional core of the album.
