It took 99 tests flights to put this man on the Moon. Mercury: 15 Gemini: 19 Apollo: 19 Surveyor: 7 Lunar Orbiter: 5 Explorer: 6 Ranger: 9 Project Fire: 2 Scout: 2 Little Joe I/II: 7 Pioneer: 8 It's easy to think of Apollo in isolation, but the testing program was fundamental.

Feb. 1960 - first launch of a Polaris missile with an Inertial Guidance System. Aug. 1961 - First major contract signed for the Apollo program (MIT Instrumentation Lab). I was decided early on that Doc Draper would be in the driving seat.

Same day as the Soviets launched Sputnik. Little did these Avro engineers know that many of them would be at the tip of the spear in the push to the Moon.

Apollo 17 = 17 trips to the Moon! Have these morons ever read a book or conducted a tiny bit of research.

"NASA lost the technology to get us to the moon. They lost the original tapes of the moon landing, and what you saw of Neil Armstrong stepping off the LEM was a projection on a wall filmed by TV cameras. When asked why we can’t go back, NASA said, ‘We can’t replicate that

Not interested in the original debate, AR & WVB were important but not the “top figures”, whatever that means. Look no further than Mueller and Phillips who overruled WVB on many issues. If VB ran the program then NASA would not have landed on the Moon.

The two top figures of the Apollo program, Arthur Rudolph and Wernher von Braun, were German citizens who entered the United States as refugees

Pretty much sums up the mandate that the NACA had. Theoretical research - universities Fundamental research - NACA research centers Development- private industry. The NACA trode a fine line between both.

"Basic" research by definition is very much about discovery and learning new things. Pushing the boundaries of what we understand. Science experiments at their core That is very far removed from product development and low "technology readiness level" by nature Basic research

The Mercury program didn’t need fancy hoists, the technicians just lifted the spacecraft into position.

This week in 1960, test pilot Joe Walker flew the Museum's North American X-15 (56-6670) on his first free flight in the X-15. He would go on to pilot the X-15 two dozen times, including two flights over the Kármán line. #AirSpacePhoto

#OTD in 1960 research pilot Joseph Walker flew the first NASA flight in an X-15 rocket aircraft. He reached Mach 2 at 48,630 feet altitude. It was the ninth flight of the program; the preceding eight flights had been flown by Scott Crossfield as part of the acceptance process.

Remember that part in the Apollo 13 movie when Lovell asks MOCR to check he has calculated the gimbal angles correctly before Jack shuts down the CSM? That sheet sold for $388,000 😅
