In this paper, we extend the ecological scaffolding model of evolutionary transitions in individuality by proposing a mechanism of endogenization that brings us a step closer to understanding the emergence of genuine collective-level individuals.

We provide an example based on our recent work on scaffolding endogenization ([), showing how shifting from an internalist to an externalist perspective changes the focus from altruism to collective-level stability in different environments.

Internalist and externalist explanations should not be seen as opposing, but rather as complementary. Each provides a unique perspective on the world and is better suited to answer certain questions.

According to this framework, what kickstarts an ETI are environmental factors providing sufficient conditions for the three conditions to be met. An example of this process is hydrothermal vents that might have provided the template for cell walls.

A different mode of explanation is offered by the ecological scaffolding framework, as discussed in several papers (see for example [ and [).
