Oppenheimer is an interesting watch, but it takes a lot of conscious choices to write, cast, and direct a film that is so starkly homogeneous. If you believe your film to be historically accurate and it ends up looking like this, perhaps your (figurative) lens wasn't wide enough.

Every one of Soraya's points resonates deeply. I jumped ship for higher ed ~2 years ago and feel healthier and more supported at work. Working with journalism students, I underscore life balance and try to prepare them to advocate for themselves, precisely because of these norms.
Last week was the end of my time @NPR. It was also the end of my time in journalism. I have spent close to a decade making audio & fighting for the rights of my colleagues as an organizer @GimletUnion, contract action mem @NYTimesGuild & steward @WeMakeNPR.

This advice is evergreen! You never know what's going to be great as a work sample or portfolio piece down the road. There's great work I did in undergrad that I wish I had today. There's great professional work I did that I wish I would have pushed harder to get credit for.

As we near the end of the academic year, two pieces of advice for students in college media: 1. Save all your portfolio work now, and make sure it will be accessible to you outside of your school accounts. 2. Make sure all your published work features your byline correctly.
