When someone whose work you really admire cites you as an influence. it makes you feel really bloody old! But thanks to the master wordsmith @James1940.
Actually, the book that made me think, ‘yes, this is the way to write history,’ was Finest Hour by @philmcraig and Tim Clayton. Absolutely brilliant - and an amazing BBC TV series too for that matter. Came out back in 1999, I think, but still very much in print.

Felt good putting the old team back together when I spoke to @andrewlownie earlier today about his new book, which is fascinating the world right now! It will be available on @MongersPodcast next weekend. And neither of us wore corduroy trousers or had any obvious nose hair!

I'm not going to break the embargo, but one of the things about @andrewlownie book on Andrew and Fergie that gives real pleasure is the deliciously bitchy anecdotes from former staff and courtiers who had to put up with his boorish behaviour and short temper. Some expertly.

Spoilers - I don't think that Britain was the baddie in WW2 but looking at some of the little known stories from the final months of the war, and the months that followed. well it's not always pretty. #Wartsandall

@philmcraig My husband - a news junkie and an avid reader, particularly of 20th century history - just finished this and described it as revelatory, and the best book he'd read in a very long while.
