I had kidney cancer, and several costly treatment options. I thought I made an informed choice. But my physician had a different idea.

Even when patients make informed decisions about the cost of their care, their doctors are in charge.

President Trump promised to “end inflation and make America affordable again.” In honor of that promise, he should address the enormous increase in what Medicare patients are being asked to pay for drugs.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, some people's monthly premiums are paid in full by the federal government. Unfortunately, even a small change in price can cause people to lose their coverage. Behavioral econ has a good explanation for this problem:

Some people's insurance plans change from free to $5 or $10/month. That small difference is enough for many of them to lose coverage.

Too often, people with chronic pain are viewed as complainers by friends, family, and even their clinicians. That view misunderstands the neuroscience of most chronic pain.

Neuroscience research proves that people with chronic pain have hypersensitive pain pathways in their brains.

Give kids an allowance without requiring any work and they plop in front of their new videogame consoles while their dirty dishes collect in the sink. That’s the logic behind work requirements for people who receive safety net benefits.

Standing 2 inches from my face, he shined a bright light into my eyes, studying my retinas as earnestly as a preschooler searching for Waldo. Then he sat back and tersely summarized his diagnosis: “There is nothing wrong with your eyes.” .

If you have chronic pain, your doctors should identify ways to calm down your brain’s reaction to painful stimuli rather than tell you you're fine.

Here's a brief explainer about why your out of pocket costs might be especially high if your company is self-insured. I know: gripping topic, right?.

Self-insured employers pay more for medical care because they do not negotiate successfully with insurers.
