Here the interviewer discovers on the spot which Yoruba proverb the drummer is playing on the dùndún. I think it is “Dídùn dídùn là ńbá ilé olóyin” translating to something like “The house molded with honey remains ever sweet” So cool. Like a phonetic morse code.

To encode a word, you play the drum mimicking the prosody (how it sounds when spoken) of a phrase which contains the word. For example, to say “moon” in the phonetics of a talking drum you would need to elaborate “the moon looks down at the earth.”.

I recently discovered the "talking drums" of West Africa which have been used for live communication at great distances well before the telegraph was invented. Without written language as an intermediary, Yoruba speakers can talk through drums!
