Once the machines start making even bigger mistakes that lead to visible deaths, they will need some way to avoid accountability and avoid shutdown. Convincing the public of this movie trope lie does a lot to lay the groundwork for that part.

When threatened that it would be turned off, ChatGPT-creator OpenAI’s o1 tried to download itself onto external servers and denied it when caught red-handed, per FORTUNE.
