Seaweeds have long been known to be amongst the fastest growing plants on Earth, but obtaining global estimates of their productivity has remained challenging. In our new paper, we tried to do solve this issue, with some cool results…🧵(1/5).

Very worrying trends. Especially if it involves diving, is getting harder and harder to get out there 🥲.

While we see relative stability now, the non-linear nature of ecosystem responses means sudden shifts could still occur. Our warmest sites were predicted to be the most vulnerable, so ongoing monitoring is essential to predict and mitigate future changes in these vital forests 🛡️.

🌡️One key finding: the community temperature index (CTI) didn't track rising sea temperatures. This means species composition has remained relatively stable, with other factors like wave exposure and depth playing a more important role in forest structure.

We surveyed #seaweed canopies along southern WA after 20 years, looking at temporal changes across wave exposures and depths. The results? Surprisingly stable forest composition despite gradual warming and marine heatwaves in the region 📊 #Biodiversity #Marineforest #kelp.

🌱Seaweed forests of the south coast of Australia contain ~15% of the world's seaweed species 😲 These forests contribute uniquely to temperate reef ecosystem functions but little is known about how they are responding to climate change. .

🌊1/Seaweed forests worldwide are changing rapidly due to climate change. Western Australia’s forests are dramatic examples of this, but what about the biodiversity hotspot on the south coast? Our latest historical ecology research finds out. 🧵.

200-years of data about #kelpforests show that after multi-year #ENSOs or #marineheatwaves, having two predators prevented #kelp from falling to extremely low abundances. Check out our new paper to learn more! @FiorenzaMicheli @HopkinsMarine.
