Rare mutations in NR4A2 (Nurr1) offer unexpected insights into the causes of autism.
After years of unanswered questions, a rare NR4A2 gene mutation gave Franklin Henry and his family clarity, and sparked new research into the genetic roots of #autism. Now, he's helping @UCLAHealth researchers better understand how the brain develops. https://t.co/EtczSAf96E

The ependymal derivatives of mDA progenitors in the adult retained several mDA progenitor characteristics but also expressed, e.g., Pdyn, the precursor of opioid peptides. These specific ependymal cells might form a novel type of circumventricular organ. 4/5

In embryos lacking Nfib, Nfix and Sox9, we could see, on average, +60% mDA neurons by E18. However, their inactivation after completing mDA neurogenesis had very little impact. 3/5

We identified transcription factors Nfib, Nfix, and Sox9 as regulators of cell cycle exit in mouse mDA progenitors. Their early inactivation in the midbrain leads to delayed mitotic exit and ependymal maturation, impaired gliogenesis, and increased neurogenesis. 2/5
