Our paper gives detailed insights into where and how much skill improvement we can currently expect with our proposed data assimilation setup. The paper discusses the limiting factors that have to be addressed in future research to increase the improvements that we achieved.

We ran the model at 1 km resolution to use much of the high-resolution information in the original Sentinel-1 data. We also worked with Level-1 data and an established observation operator instead of assimilating soil moisture retrievals to obtain a more self-consistent setup.
