Updating my bio for new followers - I’ve acquired 3 accounting firms. Appletree provides bookkeeping, tax and consulting to small businesses nationwide. Previous background was sales and advisory. Dad of 3 boys.

I agree with these price ranges. There’s a huge spectrum out there.

Standard rates for finance roles in SMB land (depending on complexity, business size, etc.):. • Bookkeeping: $500-$3k/mo.• CPA: $1k-$10k/year.• FCFO: $3k-$8k/mo .• FT Controller: $8k-$15k/mo.• FT CFO: $15k-$30k/mo. Not a hard rule, just a rule of thumb.

I loved this book. Bourbon, business, family legacy, Kentucky, and great story telling.

We tend to run ā€œoverstaffedā€ which has allowed us this year to handle: .- 3 maternity leaves.- Summer vacations .- Firing someone during tax season.- Staff health issues .- Surprise resignations .- Ramp up time for new staff . I cannot imagine how stressful above would be at full.

Paying your fractional CFO to review bad bookkeeping or clean it up is waste of time and money. Get good bookkeeping done first.

One fun culture thing we’ve done is a ā€œsocialā€ channel on slack. Jokes, memes, vaca pics, and personal pics get shared. This last week was a lot of kids graduations and last day of school pics.

Why do I have to repeat everything to staff 1000x? . Also me - can’t remember the workout instructions 30 seconds after the coach explains it.

Quarterly tax estimates are due by Father’s Day. Steal your kids dessert and call it dad tax - teach them a lesson.

One of my strategic goals this year was to improve gross margin by 10%. So far it’s improved by 6%. Sticking new hires and filling up current staff paying off.

Yes there’s a logical formula and accounting method to determine working capital. But for 95% of acquisitions under $5M it’s not about logic, it’s about the seller’s emotions - they don’t need to leave you extra cash.

"We think accountants are the unsung heroes in the phalanx of professional service providers. They do not have the panache and swagger, or fees, of their banker and legal brethren, but they are by the entrepreneur’s side during the entire entrepreneurship through acquisition.
