Humans however maintained the advantage against all systems, except for Whisper large, which outperformed humans in every condition but pub noise. These findings have implications for ASR development and our understanding of how human speech perception differs from ASR.

We tested 3 types of adverse listening conditions: noise type (speech-shaped and pub noise), noise level (0 and 8dB) and recordings produced with or without face masks. As expected, WER increased in pub noise, a 0dB SNR, and face mask speech for both humans and ASR.

A long-held goal of automatic speech recognition systems has been to achieve human-like performance. Our paper uses recent releases of wav2vec 2.0 and Whisper, comparing their transcription capabilities to L1 British English listeners.
