This thread is amazing because people are actually out here defending the concept of age verification for pizza purchases.

I've just been asked to age verify for a takeaway order because of a restricted item??? Is this a consequence of the Online Safety Bill?

Today we’re introducing Copilot Mode in Edge, our first step in reinventing the browser for the AI age. My favorite feature is multi-tab RAG. You can use Copilot to analyze your open tabs, like I do here with papers our team has published in @Nature journals over the last year.

An obvious case of lex specialis. There is no way such a standard can be applied consistently and its existence will encourage academics to substitute lobbying and pressure campaigns for open collegial debate. Very poor.

I think the threshold for AI to be genuinely transformative in scientific discovery remains "can this model ask interesting questions" rather than "can this model suggest useful answers". And that remains some way off.

If you treat AI (or machine learning) as a tool, then it has been useful in many scientific domains for a long time and the latest models are impressive but not yet transformative. If you treat AI as an end in itself, then I can see why the last years feel transformative.

Small team focused on the project at hand, well defined quantifiable goals, short iterative dev cycles: none of this is original or should be very controversial by now. And yet. And of course you feel the difference when a motivated CS dev joins the team. Blinding light.

Some of the biggest timesinks when developing software in experimental high energy physics were caused by making choices based on our abstract impressions of what is "good" code rather than defining quantitative metrics and chasing them. And vice-versa.
