Not all disagreements in the #SupremeCourt are about law: #CJI Gavai and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan differed today on how to regard the attempted shoe-throwing incident. #CJI calls it a āforgotten chapterā but Justice Bhuyan calls it an āaffront on the institutionā.

The Bench can only be as good as the Bar it gets elevated from. In that way, it is fitting that we have two sides of the same coin in Advocate Rakesh Kishore and Justice Shekhar Yadav.

CJI has shown grace by letting Rakesh Kishore off&this shows grace of CJI at a personal level. However, what about the institutional response to Kishoreās cowardly act. The CJI is a repository of constitutional trust. There must be a befitting response to Kishoreās actions.

While there have been past instances of Supreme Court judges facing physical attacks by disgruntled litigants, this one seems to be inspired by hatred towards CJI Gavai, who hails from a Dalit, Buddhist background.

Bulldozer actions have been so romanticized by the executive and certain sections of the media that the need to follow due process, as mandated by the Supreme Court, is perceived as pampering the minority community. Let us uphold at least some semblance of the rule of law.
