Packed auditorium for UKSF 2024 plenary session. Impressive line up of speakers for this panel discussion. Starting with discussion of NHS 10 year health plan. Stroke a major topic in this. For us, vision is a major topic within stroke care. @BIOS_Orthoptics @UKStrokeForum

Dynamic workshop at the Canadian Stroke Congress. Cold outside in Calgary but busy indoors. Great to talk though the VISA vision screening tool with practical session. Highlighting the many issues related to visual impairment. A worldwide unmet need for stroke survivors. @LivUni

DO use the VISA screening tool. This is standardised AND validated AND has regulatory approval; all important for NHS/clinical use. It is FREE to use! https://t.co/TYUMpPVE25 DO NOT use checklists/questionnaires (eg BEFAST, VFAST, BIVI-IQ). These don't meet screening requirements

National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke call for vision screening of all stroke survivors using a standardised tool. What is standardised and/or validated? What can I use? What can I NOT use?

Vision screening for stroke survivors in acute and community settings – what to do? UK NICE Guidelines call for orthoptic-delivered (not orthoptic-led) blanket assessment of all stroke survivors. If not possible prior to discharge, then vision screen using a validated tool.

On World Stroke Day today, a reminder of how common visual impairment is due to stroke. Over 60% of stroke survivors develop visual problems. These are not always obvious or 'visible'. And - visual problems can be the only sign of stroke. Active vision screening needed - early!
