The first episode of our new documentary series
@RedactedLives
is out now.
It tells the stories of women and children who spent time in mother and baby homes.
It has been such a privilege to work with survivors for the past year to create the series.
According to messages and posts over the past few days, I am a cunt and a bitch and in one case a person said it's 'wishful thinking' l would be 'finished off'.
Would any of this shit put me off doing my job? No.
Solidarity to all those who marched in counter-protest today.
The authors of those FactChecks have received a lot of unacceptable (and misogynistic, of course) abuse online since.
To see a physical presence (albeit outside an empty office) is an escalation that should be condemned by
@MichealMartinTD
’s government.
You know what's comparable to living in Nazi Germany? Living in Nazi Germany.
Stop comparing (often minor) inconveniences to genocide.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
There was a sketch years ago in The Savage Eye where Éamon de Valera celebrated getting the keys to Ireland back off the British.
In the scene, he hands them straight to a bishop. All too accurate.

Redress scheme for Mother and Baby Homes is inadequate and must be extended, human rights experts say
My pronouns are she/her.
Adding your pronouns to your Twitter bio and email signature etc may seem like it doesn't matter but it helps trans and NB folks do the same.
Someone else's pronouns have no effect on you and yours. Just be sound.

I'm honoured to win a Justice Media Award for my work on Mother and Baby Homes over the past year.
Thanks to everyone who has trusted me with their stories. Many more to come.
Congratulations to the other winners.

speaking now - calling for ban on conversion therapy & making sex ed more inclusive. She notes how many supportive parents are here today, hoping this continues to increase.
Always rather depressing/inevitable to see the Dáil empty for the actual debate on Mother and Baby Homes redress scheme, before filling up for the vote itself.
BREAKING: State admits Philomena Lee and Mary Harney's rights were breached by Commission
A hugely significant victory for

Once more for the people in the back: Trans rights are human rights.
Cis people are not an authority on trans issues, nor should they seek to be.

From travelling to Kenya to report on women’s rights issues such as child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to interviewing people in Lebanon about their experience in refugee camps, Órla has a diverse body of work.
FYI - If you send transphobic tweets/replies, I will report and block you.
I have no time for that crap.
Ireland should be providing healthcare for the people who live here. Full stop.
Who is best placed to talk about the experiences of trans people? Trans people themselves.
Their voices should be elevated and listened to.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Fair play to Jedward - as well as disputing the conspiracy theorists, they're making great points about protecting other people and the impact of all this on our mental health.
#latelate
For those saying, 'sure it was also bad in other countries' and 'all experiences in the homes weren't bad', maybe just don't today.
Your hot take isn't worth it, it's insulting to survivors.
Thread: Tusla has refused an FOI request from Peter Mulryan, saying it cannot locate records about his older sister.
Bridget was born in Holles Street Hospital on 29 October 1936 before being transferred to St Gerard’s, an institution for unmarried mothers and their children.
The Irish healthcare system is failing transgender people and forcing them to go abroad for treatment,
@Noah_Halpin
says.
Ireland "can’t keep sending people abroad for major invasive surgeries with little to no aftercare when we get home", he says.
"Does that sound familiar?"

People who gave evidence to the

Commission are contacting the Data Protection Commissioner & gardaí about the destruction of audio recordings of their testimony.
A number of witnesses say they would not have testified if they knew the audio would be deleted.
A thread on mental health for the day that's in it.
Like a lot of people, this year has been difficult for me.
For a few months I was in quite a dark place and really struggling.
The pandemic has impacted us all in different ways and continues to do so.

Just to note -
@ococonuts
has done phenomenal work on illegal adoptions and Mother and Baby Homes over the years.
He uncovered so much and for a while was pretty much the only journalist shining a light on all this.
Thank you very much for all the messages of support and solidarity - they are much appreciated, as are the many donations
@thejournal_ie
has received since the protest yesterday.
I'm grand and generally don't pay too much heed to keyboard warriors...
When it was pointed out that one of the victims had tried to take her own life, a member in one forum asked "Was she hot?"
Legislation on image-based sexual abuse is urgently needed.
If you see anyone sharing this type of material, call them out. It is not okay.

This may get lost amid all the madness, but the
#BurialsBill
has passed the Oireachtas & been sent to President Higgins to be signed into law.
A very significant development for survivors & relatives. It comes almost a decade after Catherine Corless first published her research.
Long-awaited legislation to allow for the excavation of the former mother and baby institution site in Tuam has passed through its final stage in the Oireachtas
Fine Gael byelection candidate James Geoghegan organised a conference for anti-abortion TDs and senators.
The event featured a standing ovation for these politicians' rejection of legislation that provided for abortion when mothers' lives were at risk.
Exclusive: Nurses working in the ICU at St Vincent’s University Hospital say they are at “breaking point” due to chronic staff shortages.
They have to use a baby monitor to watch certain patients as there are not enough staff members to cover every bed.
James Sugrue was boarded out with his brothers in Kerry. He was abused as a child.
He and thousands of others who were fostered as children are excluded from the

redress scheme.
"How dare they exclude us? ... I'll keep protesting until I die."
There is some confusion over what Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said at a Policing Authority meeting about image-based sexual abuse today.
Here is exactly what he said:
More debate on the records of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes in the Dáil this afternoon.
Catherine Connolly says sealing the records for 30 years "is not about protecting the survivors, this is about protecting the system".
The Commissioner, confusion and a history lesson in muting women.
My report on a strange event that resulted in more questions than answers for survivors of
#MotherAndBabyHomes
This was something else.
Prof Mary Daly acknowledged the
#MotherAndBabyHomes
Commission discounted evidence of hundreds of survivors given to Confidential Committee.
She also basically gave out to

for having "a bee in his bonnet" about Bessborough.
Report to follow.
This is such a mess.
When a witness who gave testimony to the
#MotherAndBabyHomes
Commission tried to report the destruction of her audio recording to gardaí, they told her to contact police in England (where she now lives), police today referred her *back* to gardaí.
While we're talking about trans issues - some young people here face a waiting list of *five years* for healthcare.
Meanwhile, adults are forced to go abroad for surgery they can't access here due to long waiting lists or huge cost.

Survivors of

are calling for the redress scheme to be extended.

When the Commission into Mother and Baby Homes published its report in January 2021, many survivors felt ignored - all over again.
Since then I've been working with people who passed through the system, as mothers & children, so they can tell their own stories in their own words
I don't agree with any personal abuse or threats being directed at politicians, but to say people concerned about the mother and baby homes bill have been “fooled by online trolls” is simply incorrect & an insult to survivors, many of whom have been retraumatised by this debate.
I asked one FF TD who was behind the supposed 'hijacking':
"People involved in politics, people we can figure that out for themselves, it's fairly obvious."
"I edged towards the door and when I got there one shouted: 'Hazel Chu, you're going to turn into a shapeshifting dragon someday and we're going to catch it on camera'."
The culmination of deeply embedded racism and buying into conspiracy theories.

says the Government’s Mother and Baby Homes redress scheme fails to consider human rights violations perpetrated on thousands of women & children.
Many issues yet to be examined - thousands of unexplained deaths, illegal adoption, racism & other forms of abuse.
Forced and illegal adoption was widespread in Ireland, regardless of what the commission says, survivors have repeatedly told us.
Many told the commission too, and can't understand how their testimonies have been misinterpreted, misconstrued or ignored.
