Here we are, or at least here’s the local half of the team, ready to embark on our annual Xmas lunch, and thinking about our team members far, far away, in the US, China and Japan! Merry Xmas to us all 🎄!

New paper out 🎺 introducing process-based measures of automatisation in L2 The elicited imitation task is widely used as a measure of automatized L2 knowledge. However, the scoring of the task relies exclusively on product-based measures (i.e., accuracy of L2 production).

Here’s @MackJustyna presenting our aspect training study: our error-correction model predicted faster and smoother learning for a grammar approach and slower and more variable learning for a lexical approach. Which type of learning deals with real language best?

These findings have real-world applications, such as the way English is taught as a second language and understanding how we, as individuals, make judgments based on accents in high-stakes situations like job interviews.

We found a clear linear effect of conscientiousness: the more conscientious you are, the less acceptable you find foreign-accented speech, regardless of the presence of grammatical errors. Other personality types showed a more complex, nonlinear pattern.

We found that the article errors were more detrimental in the British accented speech than in the Polish accented speech and that the personality traits of the listeners had an impact on the acceptability ratings.

The 40 passages were read aloud by two British and two Polish speakers, one female and one male, at a natural speed. The participants were then asked to rate on a scale of 1-100 how the language sounded to them.

The poor grammar versions had different types of article errors (“the” or “a/an”) as in “I enjoy Edinburgh Fringe Festival” or “We celebrate the Christmas” or “We exchanged the wishes”.
