When we talk about health insurance premiums, we typically frame them as financial burdens, because they often are!. But—absent auto-pay—paying premiums is also a hassle, and I had this nagging question: what do tiny premiums do to enrollment?. We try to answer that here. 🧵

True for the Medicaid cuts, but the hits to ACA marketplace plans — including the expiration of enhanced subsidies that was slated to happen with or without this bill — generally land in January.

A challenge for Ds who expect the passage of this bill to help them win elections is that it may take a while for people to feel the full negative effects. Rs front loaded some temporary tax cuts for working people and backloaded cuts to Medicaid to hit after the midterms.

Wisconsin passed a budget in the middle of the night that, among other things, increased provider taxes to the maximum permitted value, so they would be grandfathered before the House votes on reconciliation.

These folks — with disabilities but who did not enter Medicaid through a disability pathway — may actually be at higher risk of being screened out by paperwork. SNAP work requirements screened out older people/folks with multiple chronic conditions at a rate >5x the young/healthy

Medicaid enrollees who enroll through disability pathways, because their disability meets the very strict definition used by SSI are automatically exempted. But 10% of working-age adults who do *not* receive SSI also report disabilities that affect their ability to work.

This is just another attempt to lie by the fearmongering Democrats. Disabled Americans WILL NOT lose their Medicaid coverage. In fact, Republicans are strengthening Medicaid to ensure that vulnerable Americans will continue to have reliable access to care.

Of course, belief that government doesn't do things well is a key premise animating Republicans' preference for market-based policy solutions. (At least, that's how I was raised to think in a distinctly right-of-center household.).

A funny thing about Republicans insisting that work requirements will only screen out those who are, in fact, not working is that it relies on an implicit assumption that state governments will be errorless administrators.

the Senate-passed version of the Big Beautiful Bill has a wacky SNAP cut provision, rewritten to win over Lisa Murkowski, that appears to give states an incentive make MORE erroneous SNAP payments instead of fewer. House members are literally laughing at it.

What in the unnecessary math is this legislative text? . (This is the legislative text that exempts states with the worst SNAP error rates from policy that was supposed to be designed to punish states with high SNAP error rates)
